Spring to Summer!
February 6, 2004 | 12:00am
The fashion machine is at it again cranking out the old and churning out the new, the hot, the must-have, the fresh-off-the-designer-oven. Just when you finally found those perfect silver flats, the cutest mod mini or a gorgeous Oriental bejeweled neckpiece, the Spring/ Summer 2004 season steps in between to turn your closets upside down. Well, we can either ignore this schizophrenic style circus and just stick to the tried and true classics, or look the devil in the eye and take it for a ride. If youre like me and cant tolerate things being stagnant, then this seasonal shedding is always welcome to wreak havoc. I love the insanity of it all no matter how much it sometimes pisses me off when it makes me spend for newer and "better" things. We can go on and on how this disposable, consumerist society will eventually cause the human race to implode, but heck, it looks like its here to stay, so I say we party on.
The Clothes: For S/S 04, designers invoked a season of soft feminine elegance. In contrast to last seasons dressed-up glamour, this season offers a more laid-back appearance. Clothes are undeniably feminine and supple, yet they have an almost casual attitude about them. Theres an eclectic mix of colors, fabrics and styles, without reference to the bohemian lifestyle of seasons back an amalgamation of everything from tropical prints, neon neoprene, earthy tweeds, pastel chiffons and intricate prints. Almost every decade is represented in the collections yet the look is not retro. While inspired by the past, everything looks fresh and modern there are no literal translations of historical trends. This is a great time for women to explore their own style, and not just copy whats on print or on sale. Fun, fun!
The standouts: Alexander McQueens brilliant collection of dance-inspired Depression-era pieces presented in the most unique spectacle of the season both male and female models danced their way on and off stage.
Marc Jacobs ditches Courreges and gets back to what he does best late 70s, vintage chic.
Prada-dip-dyed resortwear.
Chanel lacy tops, flirty florals, summer tweeds and saucy swimwear can stock you up for the rest of the season.
The Highlights:
Sheer, transparency!
Ruffles/drapery
Camisoles, bralettes
Loose shorts (paper-bag waist pants), pleated fabrics
Lemon/lime
