Reflections This Lenten Season

Lent is a season of soul searching and repentance; of reflection and sacrifice; of being generous and of taking stock of our lives. It is the celebration of Christ’s passion during the time He went off into the desert to meditate on what path His life was to take.

This Lenten Season, 2002 Choral Olympic Champion San Beda College Chorale sings with The Hiraya Men’s Chorus in a presentation called REFLECTIONS to be held at the San Beda Abbey on April 6, 2003. Among the special guest is renowned performer Audie Gemora. Proceeds will be for the benefit of St. John Mary Vianney Seminary in San Carlos, Negros
Occidental.

The San Beda College Chorale was Olympics champion in the young male choir category in Pusan, Korea in October 2002 and 1st place winner in the same category at the NAMCYA. Made up of 22 college students, the chorale represented the Philippines in the prestigious choir festival. Attesting to their musical growth is the selection of their current repertoire ranging from French, German, Italian and English Madrigals from the renaissance to baroque, classical, national and international folksongs as well as foreign and local popular music. Soon after the concert, the group will embark on a tour of Europe and Taiwan to participate in various choral festivals and competitions.

The Hiraya Men’s Chorus, on the other hand, is a Filipino male vocal ensemble formed in January 2000. It is the fulfillment of choirmaster and founder Alfred John de Veyra’s vision to form a choir that specializes in all-male repertoire. Having been a member of the Philippine Madrigal Singers, de Veyra realized that the all-male repertoire is an untapped reservior of music and a novelty concept after several mixed choir pieces have surfaced. The Filipino audience deserves to hear what foreigners have feasted their ears on for years.
