Boy2 Quizon: Straight Out Of Comedy Kingdom
March 17, 2003 | 12:00am
Everybody wants to be with July. Why? What for? His pre-paid card? The 30-second (or perhaps even less) commercial had not explained well enough. As far as the audience knows, July gets invited to all the parties, friends text him as if he’d diminish into thin air anytime soon, and at the end of each exciting day, July goes home to an infuriated mother, demanding where he had come from. Well, there goes the story line. Questions still unanswered.
He comes from a world of candid camera shoots, bloopers and slapstick scenarios. He is, in a word, the punch line. Manuel Villegas Quizon, who instead of using the traditional "Jr.", as all guys named after their fathers do, is more popularly called Boy2. "My dad’s Boy One, which makes me Boy2. The name stuck to me since I was a kid but now most of my friends call me Dos instead. I mean it would sound really awkward if you called me Man2, right?" he explains. July, Junior, Boy2, or Dos, it wouldn’t matter. The big curly hair (think Bob Marley) that frames his rather small face could only belong to someone straight out of comedy kingdom.
While getting into showbiz and modeling seemed to have been handed to him, gift-wrapped in shinny paper with a bow on top, Boy2 took this opportunity to his advantage. "One of the good things about being in this business is that I can bring out my artistic side. Another thing is if I wanted to say or show something, I’ll somehow get other’s attention. I guess people find my being expressive interesting." Well, of course he’ll catch your eye! Besides the big hair, it would be rather hard not to notice a guy running away from a wild boar, rocks at hand, in Boracay.
"I can be funnier behind the camera. I’m really pilyo and there are so many other things that I can’t do in front of the camera. If I do anything too crazy, people might start talking about it the next day. I would also like to think of myself as someone deep. I appreciate discussions with friends, composing songs or thinking up of ways to change the industry," he shares. Whether it be a joke, an Apache chant, a hangout-over, mood-swing, or a whole revolution in the entertainment biz, Boy2 will pull it off with a bang. In fact, he even has a record of stealing the spotlight from the Comedy king himself without having to be part of the scene. "I was sleeping during a shoot that time. The P.A woke me to say my turn was up. Since I was still out of it from my nap, I just walked right into the set while my grandfather was in the middle of a serious scene. Talagang pasok bigla sa camera! Panira eksena!" Boy2 narrates with jest.
Never putting off being happy till tomorrow, nothing can seem to rain on this 18-year-old’s parade. "Wa-poise moments? Rumors? I just laugh about it. I guess these things just happen. I mean, what could be worse than getting chased after by dogs or putting on a skeleton costume and huge shades in front of the camera, right?" he shrugs, combing his fingers through those phone cord-like locks (a task that looked almost Herculean). Despite the unconventional look and untimely manner, which have raised a couple of eyebrows here and there, Boy2 has made an impression that is sure to last. His creed? "I don’t try to fit the characters. I make the characters fit me." And sure enough, everything that has come his way has been suited for him as if tailor-made.
A definite character to look out for, Boy2 has big dreams to match the hair. "I’d like to be remembered as somebody who began something big. Just don’t ask what it is yet, because I’m still working on it. There are so many things I’d like to do that it’s hard to determine where I’m going to start." Boy2 explains. He’ll probably reign over comedy land, grow his hair a little longer (maybe a rebond?), or get serious with his budding flair for music and change his name (again) to Ragamuffin. Who knows? Not him for certain. Well, at least not for now. Till then, it looks like there will be more laughs, jokes and comedy to come.
