PWU students join Gardenia’s ‘Next Big Sandwich Hit’ tilt

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - They were all armed and ready for the cooking challenge that would require them to squeeze out all their creative culinary qualities and create a unique sandwich concoction that everybody will love.

This was the scenario during the qualifying round of the “Next Big Sandwich Hit,” organized by the makers of fresh, soft and good-tasting Gardenia bread, held at the Philippine Women’s University (PWU) in Manila, and the school’s aspiring chefs and would-be entrepreneurs took the challenge head on.

In one short hour, the student-contestants gave it their all to create two unique sandwich recipes which would be served to the judges and to their schoolmates as well.

The kitchen immediately went into high gear as the students battled against time to complete all their tasks. Pans simmered with aromatic flavors that played with the senses, hands shook off the nerves to accurately dab the breads with the right amount of fillings, sauces and whatnots to create the sandwich that would take them to the next round of the competition.

Several eye-catching creations came out of the kitchen and awed both judges and their schoolmates with their creative flair and skillful masterpieces.

But aside from their culinary skills, their business acumen was also tested as the judges scrutinized their sandwich business concept, which would be tested during the challenge round to be held at the Mercato Midnight Bazaar in Bonifacio Global City if they would win the qualifying round.

Though all of them toiled and did their best, only one team would move on to the next round of the competitions, which is the Mercato Challenge and the Finale during Gardenia’s “Happy Bread Day” happening later this month.

The duo of John Paul Aw and Richard Allen Lim, who made a savory sandwich dish named “Monte Blanc” and a one-of-a-kind dessert sandwich named “Aurora,” will represent PWU in the next round.

Watch out as tougher tasks await all the finalists during the finale of Gardenia’s “Next Big Sandwich Hit,” which will happen on Oct. 28 at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City.
