Everybody's welcome at Subic Bay Yacht Club

- Lester Gopela Hallig -

There is always something to look forward to in Subic. If it was a decade ago, duty-free shopping was enough of a come-on. Yes, it sounds unfair to Subic because it had — still has, in fact — a lot more to offer than satisfy the shopping bugs in us.

One enduring attraction is the Subic Bay Yacht Club (SBYC). This has been a site of many special events, and it is amazing that it has withstood the test of time. Fact is, things are getting better at SBYC.

“We are in the process of upgrading our facilities,” shares SBYC general manager Jose Mari Vargas. “If they are enjoying our current offerings, they are in for bigger, better things in the very near future!”

One will be pleased to know that owning a yacht is not a requirement to be counted in as a member. Right now, the club is selling individual shares, P294,000 on a cash price that includes two years advance minimum consumable. And, of course, that membership provides a lifetime of excitement.

There is, after all, so much to do at the yacht club. For starters, guests can pick one from among the 39 rooms. Vargas explains that no two rooms are alike. For those staying in the Presidential Suite, they can enjoy separate living, dining, and receiving areas, as well as a study room, two terraces, and an outdoor Jacuzzi.

The club is currently holding its Rainy Season Room Promo wherein rooms are on a buy-one-take-one or 50-percent-off scheme. The promo can be availed of on weekdays, except Saturdays and eves of holidays. It runs until Oct. 29.

Outdoor types may want to treat themselves to wetter surroundings. The multi-level swimming pool is divided into four sections. Kids and kids-at-heart may consider the Twin Waterslides while the sporty ones may hie off to the lap and game pool.

Vargas is especially proud of the beach pool. He says, “The fine powdered sand is imported from Perth, Australia!” He motions us to the children’s pool, where kids play with rafts, chutes, water jets, and water toys to their heart’s content. And the pool area has a bar where refreshments are served.

A little further into the yacht club reveals more sporting venues: a basketball court, tennis courts with Deco Turf 2 surfaces (yes, the same ones used in the US Open), a billiards area, an eight-lane bowling alley, and a video game room.

There’s also a fabulous fitness center and a spa for men and women. The general manager volunteers, “Soon we will offer wellness packages and physical enhancement packages. This is going to be the ultimate club.”

The club’s Water Sports Center, found at Cubi Point, is touted to be a watersports enthusiast’s dream. Everything from parasailing to scuba diving is offered. We found out that the bay is among the best wreck dive sites in Asia, and so adventurous guests can schedule an appointment with the best wreck diving crew for a little tour underwater, where sunken ships and galleons are found.

Built a decade ago, the Subic Bay Yacht Club has become the playground of the nation’s crème de la crème. The P2-billion establishment is proud of its highest regard for boat safety, and commitment to excellence.

Even its food outlets such as the popular Cambusa and Mistral Videoke have made their way to must-visit lists in Subic.

“Everybody’s welcome here. Our commodore, former congressman Ricky Sandoval, has come up with a winning formula that makes the Subic Bay Yacht Club a beautiful destination,” Vargas concludes.
