Ceboom! Ceboom!

For some 22 years running, the whole of Cebu City explodes into frenzied revelry every third week of January, celebrating the feast of its patron saint Santo Niño. In the eyes of the uninitiated, it may all seem like an endless mardi-gras and senseless merry-making. Yet, beneath this carefree façade is the intense faith and devotion, bordering on fanaticism, expressed in a native dance form as a means of prayer. The movement resembles the current or sulog of Cebus Pahina River two steps forward and one step backward, with hands waving to the deafening beat of drums while chanting "Pitttttt Señor" (loosely translated to "Hear our petition, Sir"). It is a yearly pilgrimage for most, coming from far and wide and from all walks of society.
