MANILA, Philippines – From the organizers of the massive Wanderland music festival and the producers of independent concerts for the alt set (French act Phoenix, London’s Bastille and of most recent note, Alt+J), Karpos Multimedia brings Click Play: The Social Media Festival to Manila on Nov. 22 at the SMX Convention Center MOA, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.
Online video and content creation has become its own cultural tsunami (all thanks to YouTube, Vine, Instagram, among many other platforms) and in the mien of VidCon and Playlist Live (two of the biggest social media conventions headlined by the likes of Tyler Oakley and John Green, two of the online platform’s biggest stars), Click Play comes to Manila as a whole day social media festival dedicated to both inspiring and aspiring online content creators.
YouTube has conquered the digital landscape since it first launched in 2005, the platform has embraced the role of a breeding ground for the next generation of celebrity; comedian Grace Helbig (youtube.com/itsgrace) transitioned to her own cable-network talk show; content creator Tyler Oakley embraced the role of social media activist and red carpet presence, and author John Green of recent Hollywood hits A Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns as one of the original big-hit YouTubers.
Click Play embraces the nu-wave of social media stars; with billions of hits and millions of subscribers, #TeamInternet enjoys huge fan bases that embrace niche categories like video games, comedy, beauty, music, fashion and much more. The biggest draw? Putting your own bid to become the next big YouTube or Vine star is as easy as one, two, three; shoot, edit and upload.
The festival will serve as an avenue of interaction that will encourage the exchange of ideas and experiences on current digital trends and techniques among its attendees. Click Play is set to entertain with exclusive performances, interviews and on-stage fun and games. Get a chance to meet and hear what various online media personalities have to say about this bustling digital age.
Click Play is headlined by YouTube legend Ryan Higa (youtube.com/nigahiga), social media-bred Hollywood and television actor Ki Hong Lee, singer-songwriter David Choi, sibling act Cimorelli and much more. SUPREME sat down with Ryan Higa to talk about content creation, the future of YouTube and what’s next for his platform.
SUPREME: As a filmmaker, producer, comedian and screenplay writer, what would you say is your favorite part in the content creation process?
RYAN HIGA: My favorite and I feel the most important part is the screenplay writer. If I’m the producer of the film, I want it to be about something that I know the fans will enjoy.
You’ve been vlogging since 2006, and for the first generation of Youtube, one could say you were one of the pioneers of the present content cycle. What kind of content do you think shaped what we love to consume today?
I feel YouTube content is very varied and each YouTuber has his or her own style and content to please their own fan base.
As a content creator, is it important for you to disconnect once in a while?
It can be stressful during the creative process, so it’s good physically and mentally to take a break.
What’s the best advice you could give to an aspiring YouTuber who wants to start producing content in 2015?
Do it if you enjoy it. Don’t do it for the fame or money.
What’s next for Ryan Higa?
I hope to produce a movie some day.
