A stage all her own
MANILA, Philippines - Two years ago, Tippy Dos Santos broke into the local airwaves with the single, Dati performed with Sam Concepcion and rapper Quest. In the music video, she skipped along sweetly under a red umbrella, singing and playing the part of Sam’s long-lost childhood love.
Today the singer, actress, and MYX VJ is back to make music — and this time, she is striking out on her own with her debut concert Unfolded, happening on August 27 at Whitespace Makati. “We want it to be as intimate but as entertaining as possible. I’ve been listening to all my songs every single day since July!” Tippy enthuses. Joining her on stage are guests JayR, Ryan Christopher, and Sam Concepcion. Directed by Joaquin Valdes, fans can expect not only a new sound, but also a new take on live entertainment.
Tippy also has an album under Universal Records in the works. And as icing on the self-actualization cake, she has chopped off her typical long curls in favor of a fresh bob and an edgier look that brings out her features.
Things are clearly moving forward for Tippy, and she’s enjoying every moment of it. Balancing her showbiz work with a pre-med course, she admits that she has no idea where she’ll be three years from now — whether that be on stage or in a hospital training to be a doctor. But either way, she’ll be singing her heart out this coming Thursday. Supreme caught up with Tippy between rehearsals to find out who she’s become as an artist and what we can expect from her very first concert.
As a singer, you are most known for your single Dati in 2013. How have you changed as an artist since then?
I am more defined now. I know the sound I want and I feel like I’ve been through more challenges in my personal life that would add to my depth as an artist.
Can you tell us a bit more about your chopped locks and the edgier image you’ve been sporting lately?
I have been wanting to cut off my hair for about two years, but those taking care of my career were all against it. They were stuck in my “Taylor Swift”-like image. But for my 21st birthday, I pursued the idea and I told them that I was really thinking of an image change — edgier but still womanly. Thank goodness, they bought it, and now so many people are complimenting the new look. This look is truer to me and I love it!
Unfolded is going to be your debut concert. What’s it like, staging a show that is all your own for the first time?
I am over-the-top nervous. Everyone has been so supportive and helpful, but I still can’t shake the feeling that things are going to go wrong! I have to stay positive though, and I do know that the whole team behind Unfolded is working so hard. So I’ve started to feel more confident and more relaxed (just a bit). But past the nervousness, I am excited. I feel so blessed to be given this opportunity and this chance to share a big part of myself with everyone who’s going to watch.
What can we expect?
It’s going to be powerful. My songs were carefully picked to represent the powerful vocals of women from the ’90s to the early 2000s. People are going to want to jam with me because they will know the music well and have used them as theme songs in their life at one point (or another). I’m excited to sing my heart out, sing songs I’ve loved ever since and to share that with my audience.
What do you aim for as an artist?
As an artist, you just have to stay true to what you are passionate about, then hope and pray that the audience will appreciate your work. I want people to hear my music and listen to it because it’s exactly how they feel. I wish to be the kind of artist people seek because of the truth and the depth of my songs. My goal is to be the singer of the songs that will help them go through life, whether that be on their good days, or their worst.
