What to watch: ‘Rak of Aegis’
MANILA, Philippines - Who knew that a band known for their kitschy and “baduy†songs would make a theatrical sensation? That’s what happened with Aegis because Rak is back. The musical Rak of Aegis, based on songs from the ‘90s hit group, will have a rerun of the show with an even longer run. For those who missed it, the story revolves around the flooded Barangay Venizia, and a young mall promodizer who records herself singing (Ulan, of course) to get help from Ellen DeGeneres. Her video becomes viral and she ultimately has to choose between love for her town and fame. The first run was entertaining, with the audience unable to stop themselves from singing along to songs like Halik, Sinta, and Basang Basa Sa Ulan. The Rak of Aegis rerun will be from June 20 to Aug. 31 at the PETA Theater in Quezon City. There’s no need to practice singing the songs, we’re sure you know them by heart.
What to watch: ‘Stomp’ returns
As much as we’d like to promote one play a week, it’d be a shame to skip the musical Stomp. The fact that the show is 24 years old, has been staged on Broadway and the West End, and has toured all over the world is not the most impressive thing about it. It’s the way they produce their music: they use garbage can lids, buckets, brooms and sticks. And for their second Manila run, they added two new numbers using plumbing fixtures and supermarket trolleys. If you’re the type of person who enjoys making music with your pen or your shoes, you’re sure to enjoy Stomp. You can also add the show’s routines to the list of things you can do while bored in the office. Stomp will be staged until this weekend at the CCP Main Theater.
Where to eat: Peace, Love, and Patola
Foodstock had us at food, but it’s heartwarming to know that there is an underlying meaning to the event, which is also known as Peace, Love, and Patola. The organizers take their inspiration from the music festival Woodstock, and like it, they aim to bring peace, good food, and good company. It’s a food festival of organic vegetables, healthy recipes and outstanding farmers, mixed with music from some bands. If you’re modeling yourself after Woodstock, you must have music, right? This may be the most fun way to finally go healthy. Don’t wait for New Year to make another resolution! Foodstock will take place at 10A Alabama, which is also the address of the venue. Alabama Street is on the corner of E. Rodriguez Avenue, Quezon City.
Where to party: Fete de la Musique
It’s that one day a year when all the genres of music are represented for a party celebrated all around the world at the same time. Fête de la Musique is back, and for its 20th anniversary, it’s making the party even bigger by holding three main stages instead of the usual one and 19 pocket stages in two cities. The three main stages in A. Venue, Greenbelt 3, and Intramuros (at the Maestranza Plaza) will be a mix of genres, while the pocket venues will focus on a specific genre. The Manila venues are V Hotel for experimental and future music, Sazi’s Bar for alternative rock, Sev’s Cafe for spoken word, JPL Hall of Freedom for nouveau jazz, and Heaven Malate for bass beats and breaks. For Makati, the venues are Black Market for house, B-Side for rock, ska and reggae, M Cafe for hip-hop and R&B, A_Space Gallery for acoustic, Buddha Bar for chillout, Cafe Curieux for world music, H&J for blues, soul, and funk, Chihuahua for Latin, Murphy’s Pub for cabaret, Society Lounge for mod, Bayleaf Lounge for jazz, Time in Manila for electronica, and 12 Monkeys for indie. The global party starts at 3:30 p.m., and will have no door charge. Get your magic carpet ready because traffic is going to be insane.
Where to spend: Toycon 2014
You’ll probably know this is if you’re a geek, but if you were under a rock for the past few weeks, this weekend is the annual Toycon, Asia’s biggest and longest-running convention for toys, collectibles, anime, cosplay, comics, games, and everything related to every fandom imaginable. Batman geeks will have the most fun this year because this year’s Toycon will celebrate the caped crusader’s 75th anniversary with a Batman display area (with a life-sized Batpod), new merchandise, and an art and collectibles gallery. There will also be dedicated booths and events for Samurai X, GI Joe, Lego, Coca-Cola, The Guardians of the Galaxy, and Star Wars. Of course, there will also be a feature on local talent, like Marvel illustrators and cosplayers. Make sure to bring your life savings because you are going to $pend. The Toycon happens this weekend at the Megatrade Halls 1, 2 and 3 at SM Megamall.
