Koji Arsua - The Philippine Star

What to do tonight: Flexercize

MANILA, Philippines - Did you break your New Year’s resolution and fail to get the abs you’ve been hoping to parade around Boracay? Or do you already have buns of steel but have no one (or money) to go to Boracay with? Who cares about paradise when you can flex your muscles tonight at Black Market for Flexercize, a night of drunken — and muscular — revelry by Durrty Hotdog! Expect durrty electro, durrty nu disco, durrty italo, durrty dance rock, durrty alt, and everything durrty by the Durrty crew. Get your steely (or flabby) buns to Black Market and be part of the metro’s slice of paradise. Who knows, you might meet your hunk tonight.

What art to see: Tabletop

If you’re only going to see one exhibit this year, chances are, it would have to be “Tabletop” at the Altro Mondo Arte Contemporanea. The group exhibition will feature an impressive lineup of artists, a collection of award winners and nominees. “Tabletop” will feature new works from Allan Balisi, Albert Sy, Charles Buenconsejo, David Viray, Dex Fernandez, Dina Gadia, Eugene Jarque, Mac Valdezco, Mariano Ching, Ryan Nazareno Villamael, Vladimir Grutas, Zean Cabangis and Zeus Bascon. Between these artists, they have seven Ateneo Art Awards nominations (and one win for Buenconsejo), one CCP Thirteen Artist Award for Mariano Ching, and over 100 solo and group exhibitions here and abroad. It’s going to be an explosion of talent, art, and beauty. “Tabletop” will run until April 25. Altro Mondo is at Greenbelt 5.

What to watch on the screen: ‘Norte’

Did you miss the very-limited commercial run of Lav Diaz’s critically-acclaimed film Norte? Now’s your chance to see the film that has the global film industry talking. Next Tuesday, Glorietta, TriNoma, and Fisher Mall will have encore screenings of one of Cannes’ highest-rated films (second only to Palme d’Or winner Blue is the Warmest Color), and cited as one of the best films of 2013. Norte is the story of a man (Archie Alemania) who is accused of a crime he didn’t commit. He is sent to jail, and his wife (Angeli Bayani) is forced to make a living for their family. The real murderer (Sid Lucero) roams free, his disillusionment bordering on insanity. International critics are calling it the greatest work of the Philippine New Wave. Be part of history as we take over world cinema.

Where to find new comics: Summer Komikon

Everything Filipino-made seems to be enjoying a boom lately. Books, films, clothes, food and other products are getting the recognition they deserve, both on the national and international stage. It’s nice to know that the local comic book industry is booming as well, proof of which is the successful Summer Komikon 2014. The twice-annual event aims to promote local comics and the artists who make them, and this year will commemorate the very first gathering with special guests from its first year. This year will feature Marvel artist Leinil Yu; Arnold Arre, who will launch Rodski Patoski: Ang Dalagang Baby, his new comic with Gerry Alanguilan; and Macoy Tang, the indie comic book artist who will launch Ang Maskot. Both Arre and Tang will also show a few animated shorts. Like previous Komikons, this edition will have the Komikalye, where you can have your portrait drawn by top international artists Stephen Segovia, Heubert Khan Michael, Lui Antonio, Jomar Bulda, Mico Suayan, Jim Jimenez, Kim Jacinto, and Elmer Damaso. It will also have the Indie Komiks Tiangge and the Komikon Nook where fans can read local comics. The Summer Komikon will be held today at the Bayanihan Center in the Unilab Compound, Pasig.

Where to find your inner child: Craft and be Merry

Heima, the purveyor of pretty, is holding Craft and Be Merry to promote the beautiful art of paper crafting. Today, Heima Brixton will play host to crafting and merrymaking, with live art demonstrations of mural painting, paper diorama making, paper flower making, paper cutting, and MT Casa (masking tape of different colors, designs, and prints) demonstration. One of the artists to do a live art demonstration is Foldyard & Co., a fairly new artist duo composed of Erwin Hilao and Elyoo dela Cruz. The two are quickly making a name for themselves for the cuteness overload of their gig posters… made entirely out of paper dioramas. Who would have thought that paper crafts were only for kids? Head on over to Heima Brixton to rediscover your childhood. Happiness strikes at 1 p.m.
