Where to get your art fix: Art Fair Philippines 2014
MANILA, Philippines - Now is a good time for art. A new generation of artists and supporters is cropping up, making the industry livelier… and younger. Proof of art’s flourishing is John Lloyd Cruz’s support of the scene and Art Fair Philippines, a now annual gathering of the country’s best galleries. The fair was developed in 2013 by Trickie Lopa, Lisa Periquet, and Dindin Araneta, the same people behind the successful Art in the Park. Following an enthusiastic public response, the organizers are back to champion modern and contemporary Philippine visual art in an unusual setting: the car park of The Link in Makati. This time, there are 28 galleries representing the country’s most cutting-edge artists. There are solo exhibits by seven Filipino artists revered in Southeast Asia: Louie Cordero, Jose John Santos III, Rodel Tapaya, Pio Abad, Marina Cruz, BenCab, and Ronald Ventura. Like last year, architects from Leandro V. Locsin Partners and Kenneth Cobonpue have partnered to transform the car park into a magnificent art space. Where to get your music fix: 7107 International Music Festival
This is it, the first music festival of its kind in the country. Controversy surrounded the 7107 International Music Festival over the rumored lineup versus the actual lineup, but the experience of being in a festival organized by the people behind Coachella, the Super Bowl halftime show, the Oscars and the Grammys is enough to wipe away the online debates. And besides, the final lineup is pretty rad: the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kaskade, Empire of the Sun, Kendrick Lamar, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Natives, DJ Riddler, and Reid Stefan will be joined by 43 of the best names in OPM, promising an electric weekend of good music and good vibes. The carefully curated mix of genres makes it accessible to anyone regardless of musical taste, and gives viewers the chance to discover new favorites. What to get your film fix: Nihongo Fiesta 2014
Japanophiles may be interested to know that this weekend, the Shang Cineplex will play host to the Nihongo Fiesta Film Mania, a festival honoring Japanese culture in film. This weekend, you can immerse yourself in everything Nippon and watch Brave Story, King of Thorn, The Voices of a Distant Star, Robo-G, and Hayao Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle. We highly recommend Howl’s, an animated fantasy film about an 18-year-old hatmaker who is magically transformed into a 90-year-old woman. She uses the change to go on an epic adventure, throwing aside feelings of anxiety and fear. Miyazaki films are always masterpieces in motion so this one won’t be any different, after all, he is anointed as the Japanese Walt Disney. Aside from the film screenings, the Nihongo Fiesta will also feature a speech contest and a quiz bee. Brush up on your Japanese!
Where to get your theater fix: MNL X
Like art, theater has been transformed from a tita-hobby into something the new generation can appreciate. This started when the youth-led Sipat Lawin Ensemble revolutionized the scene with the groundbreaking Battalia Royale, an interactive play based on the book-turned-film. Now, many groups are quenching the thirst of audiences for a new kind of theater. This weekend, MNL X will gather Manila’s independent artists and companies for a festival of new performances in an attempt to combine new disciplines, influences, procedures, experimentations, and collaborations. The featured artists and groups promoting new theater are Jay Cruz, Tess Jamias, Eisa Jocson, Arco Renz, Transitopia Plus, Kolab Co., Sipat Lawin Ensemble, Destiyero Theater Commune, INC (Innovative Noise Collective), Games People Play, and Art isTalk. Bold new works and bold new audiences will be present at the CCP Tanghalang Huseng Batute. .
Lights out, party on at Eastwood City
Partygoers looking for a one-of-a-kind Friday night revelry are invited to let loose and dance the night away at the Eastwood City Blacklight Party—an interesting post-Valentine bash happening on Feb. 28, 7 p.m., at the Eastwood Central Plaza. Performing at the event are Deuce Manila and DJs Mars Miranda, Nina, Ron Poe and Ace Ramos. Hosting the one-night affair is MC Pao.
Eastwood City Blacklight Party is open to all individuals 18 years old and above. Those looking to join the party can bring a valid ID, which they will have to present at the venue entrance before they can get inside the event area.
