Trend alert: Which one are you?
Allegoria. Feminine-masculine. Contemporary crusader. Punk couture.
Allegoria is the mythical name for modern preppy, she is your Upper East Side-riding school mate. She can also be both masculine and feminine at the same time, like every other woman we know.
Your contemporary crusader chick is the colorful character you see in the fashion blogs. Fearless in style outlook, she is the daring diva of the lot. Our punk couturist is the modern version of what Viviene Westwood championed, only this time made more glamorous than D-I-Y.
These are the new buzzwords for the trends coming your way this holiday season, as forecasted by the P&G beauty experts. We looked at our trend spotting charts, viewed the fashion horizon and scoped out the girls who best embody the look.
Here at Supreme, we want you to be the ones to know first, so no such thing as too early. With Camille Co as style collaborator and Sean Armenta as visual sniper, we present to you the scene’s hottest, wearing the trends you’ll be sporting soon. Again, as we all know in fashion as in life, it is always best to be the first.
Romina Nañagas, Assoc. PR Director, Campaigns and Grey
Which part of you is masculine and which parts are feminine?
Not a fan of stereotypes but here goes! Masculine side — hmm, my directness (no pakipot please!), my love of manual cars and driving! I also can’t multitask, like most girls. I will devote all my energy to one task at a time. Feminine side — I squeal over Channing Tatum and Johnny Depp like a schoolgirl. When I travel, I’m no backpacker; I’m a hand-bagger, thank you very much. I love the arts, aesthetics, shopping and tiny, intricate details.
Do you think this is having the best of both worlds? How do you apply this in your job?
As an associate PR director, having both sides is definitely a plus. In our work, you need to turn your brands and clients into stories and larger-than-life ideas. Having a masculine and feminine perspective gives you a more fleshed-out POV. Also, you aren’t boxed in to just girly brands or boyish brands. I can talk about the sleek lines of a BMW Z4 one minute then shift to talking makeup and fashion the next.
How do you maintain that balance between masculine-feminine, or is one side stronger than the other?
Maintaining the balance is my favorite part! I love contrasts. It’s like shifting gears very smoothly — you’ll use your direct “no bullsh*t†Tommy Lee Jones approach but with the graciousness of Audrey Hepburn. You’ll roll up your sleeves and get dirty to get a job done but you’ll do it with style and poise. I sometimes carry huge product boxes in four-inch heels — in PR, bawal ang maarte.
Why does this look work for you?
It goes back to my love of contrasts. It’s the leather with the lace. It’s the Zara Man polo paired with vintage jewelry and pink ankle boots. The haircut, too — they say it takes a certain kind of girl, a gamine usually, who is into pixie cuts and thank God I can pull it off.
Who are other females you admire that embody this personality type?
Marlene Dietrich, the mother of androgynous dressing that started it all. Alexa Chung; it’s British rock band x vintage girl. Love this. Emma Watson’s street style — it’s effortlessly chic with masculine hints here and there to match her adorable pixie cut.
Jess Kienle, Furniture designer
How important is structure in your life and work?
Structure is everything! Without it, you can easily lose your way. It’s so important to know what you need to prioritize in life, and how to organize it. Structure will also help you work more efficiently.
How do you spice things up to keep things exciting?
I go on spontaneous weekend getaways! When you’re living in a tropical country, it’s so easy to plan a last-minute trip to the beach. It really is “more fun living in the Philippinesâ€!
What is your work-play ratio?
I would say it’s fairly equal... I think I’ve always balanced work and play quite well!
Why does this look work for you?
It’s a sweet yet quirky kind of look. Mixing classical style and a touch of “new†is always a fun combination!
Who are other females you admire that embody this personality type?
Zoe Deschanel, Rachel Bilson, Emma Roberts.
Camille Co, Fashion designer and style blogger
What to you is contemporary and what is not?
Contemporary is about tasteful reinventions and cutting-edge style. It’s never boring nor passé.
What goes on in your mind when planning outfits?
I always consider where I’m going and what I have planned for the day. It’s always about mixing fashion and function while showcasing my personal style.
Why does this look work for you?
This look is all about finding the right balance between old and new — taking traditional and imperial folklore elements and reinterpreting them in a modern way. This is definitely something I enjoy doing. I like mixing and matching different styles because I hate getting boxed in and stuck in a rut, but at the same time, I make sure whatever look I come up with is striking, put-together and sophisticated. It’s not about showy excess but rather, tasteful opulence.
Who are other females you admire that embody this personality type?
I think Sarah Jessica Parker, Anna Dello Russo and Zoe Saldana are great contemporary crusaders. They’re can wear the most outrageous things and still look timeless and tasteful.
In a selfie-obsessed culture, what is this generation fighting for?
For our own voice to be heard amid the loud voices around us and to make our own mark in such a crowded world.
Sarah Gaugler, Vocalist of Turbo Goth, tattoo artist, and painter
How relevant is punk in this day and age?
Punk is relevant because it’s a person’s individuality and freedom to just be what they feel without caring too much about the technicality of things. Punk is punk rock and punk rock is just punk. If you try to analyze it too much, it’s not punk anymore.
What is the one thing you’ll always rebel against?
I guess you can say I’m a rebel against fake-ness and pretentiousness. I’m always for being true to oneself and following your heart and doing things because it’s natural to you or truly interests you.
Define modern punk.
Modern punk is still one’s attitude towards following your heart and sharing your true nature. Being punk is the courage to radiate your essence.
Why does this look work for you?
It just comes naturally for me. I do not intend to achieve a “punk look.†It just happens with what I happen to wear, my choice of comfy but stylish clothes. When I pull my hair back and put on my eye makeup, this is just what is aesthetically appealing to me.
Who are other females you admire that embody this personality type?
Off the top of my head, Peaches! Ha-ha. I love her music and her super punk attitude. Karen O’s style is pretty punk too, and Atari Teenage riot.
