Koji Arsua - The Philippine Star

Go vinyl crazy with Satchmi

MANILA, Philippines - Nostalgia is the keyword for this generation, and it’s evident in the way we have embraced analog. One of the biggest manifestations is the preference of vinyl over modern media such as CDs and MP3s. Enthusiasts claim that the hisses and clicks are part of the charm, thus enhancing the listening experience. Tonight, Satchmi is celebrating the beauty of vinyl for Vinyl Day. Satchmi is a Vancouver-based company of music enthusiasts aiming to revive interest in vinyl in the Philippines through selling records and turntables. Today at 4 p. m., the group will hold a pop-up store at BGC High Street and sell new and vintage records at a discounted price. They will also be giving away records and a turntable, and 13 indie bands will perform to underscore the event.

See the 30 shades of The Mona Lisa Project

Everyone knows who the Mona Lisa is, even if they don’t have any background in art. It’s such a universal image that a child from the Philippines and a child from Paris would recognize the woman. But 30 artists are reimagining the mysterious lady in ways that are unimaginable to the rest of us common mortals. For “The Mona Lisa Project,” CCP has invited contemporary Filipino artists to interpret the Mona Lisa using their individual brushstrokes and perspective. The result is a hodgepodge of styles that are at times breathtaking and curious, but all of them out-of-this-world. Some of the artists invited are: Louie Cordero, Lynyrd Paras, Roberto Chabet, Bjorn Calleja, Romeo Lee, Nona Garcia, and Zean Cabangis. The “Mona Lisa Project” will be held at the CCP Bulwagang Fernando Amorsolo and Pasilyo Victoria Edades and will be on display until June 16.

98B Escolta

We previously wrote about 98B, that “collaboratory” that gathers creatives to interact and collaborate. They hold their offices in Escolta, the charming neighborhood that is experiencing a revival. One of their projects is the second SaturdayMarket@Escolta today, where these creatives can sell some of their vintage or pre-loved items. These include old posters and comics, films, magazines, clothes, and all sorts of goodies that can excite even the most jaded hipster. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the First United Building, Escolta Street.

Get lost in Wonderland with The Garden at BGC

Bonifacio Global City is turning into one giant outdoor gallery. Installation art is tastefully displayed around major thoroughfares, adding a sense of beauty in an increasingly corporate city. BGC aims to balance the glass and steel with a touch of art, making it accessible to everyone. In 2011, they launched their Offsite Gallery to create a space for exhibits, with Leeroy New’s “Psychopomp” as their first show. This time, the gallery is showcasing the works of Denis Lagdameo and Olivia d’Aboville in “The Garden,” a collection of flora made from recyclable materials in psychedelic colors. The collection is amidst everyone’s favorite restaurants and shops, providing a nice respite for tired shoppers. Offsite Gallery is located at 28th Street corner 7th Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
