Come into Tokwa Peñaflorida’s dreamland

MANILA, Philippines - Tokwa Peñaflorida, the breakout artist whose surreal art nouveau portraits are making a name in the art scene, is having his first one-man show tonight at Vinyl on Vinyl, The Collective. The exhibit is called “Hypnagogia,” which represents that in-between state before you reach sleep. The title is apt, as Tokwa’s style is a dreamy cocktail of colors, washes and moods. As his invite said, his “canvases are like lovely blossoms with the perfect worm in the heart of florid putrescence.” “Hypnagogia” is composed of characters living in a state of dreaming, with references to sleep like bangungot, the incubus and succubus, and the universal symbol of repose: the dreamcatcher. Catch the magic at 8 p.m.

Redefine fun with the Panty Monsters

Parties thrown by the Panty Monsters are always something else. From the varying music sets to the out-of-this-world clothing, going to one of their gigs is like walking into an alt fashion show… or another planet. And when the setting is Today x Future, you know you’re in for a unique treat. 1! 2! 3! Asawa ni Marie! will kick off tonight, with music from Nasty Bordon, Baronessa, Peanut Butter and Jelly, and of course, the Panty Monsters. Come tonight at 9 p.m. and experience a different kind of party. Future’s location is at 7-T General Malvar Street, Araneta Center, Cubao.

Give your old stuff a new home with 98B

Meet 98B, a “collaboratory” whose mission is to gather artists and like-minded individuals in alternative spaces in Manila to brainstorm, collaborate, and interact. They hold fort in a building in Escolta, whose old-world beauty is given a new lease by the curious and those in the know. As one of 98B’s projects, they held the first SaturdayMarket@Escolta, where creatives could sell their pre-loved and vintage items, so that they, like Escolta, can be rediscovered. The media picked up the buzz and word started to spread, encouraging the organization to hold another one. The flea market won’t be until April 27, but people can sign up now and reserve a slot. Only 30 will be given space, and we bet dozens have registered, in the hopes of becoming Escolta’s top seller. Check their Facebook page for more details.

Set yourself up for a musical mystery

Performance group BGC Impromptu will be holding performances this weekend at different venues in Bonifacio High Street. The performances range from song and dance to theater numbers, but will be held at random times between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. The mystery is interesting. Very interesting.
