MANILA, Philippines - Supreme’s men issue wouldn’t be complete without Tony Toni, Sam YG, and Slick Rick of the hit Magic 89.9 radio show, Boys’ Night Out. Raking in 45 percent of the total audience share every weeknight — 70 percent of which are said to be women — the boys have effectively become a cultural audio bible of sorts when it comes to men and all things dating.
For this feature, we asked the boys the secret to pulling off their show, and how they trend emo topics on Twitter without losing any of that manly dignity. We asked if they would ever consider breaking the bro code for someone who may be worth it. And taking from one of their recent Twitter hashtags, have the boys ever unintentionally given a girl the #creepy vibe, perhaps back in their pre-BNO days when they still had to learn a thing or two, as all men start out in the game?
SUPREME: It’s a known fact that a lot of women tune in to Boy’s Night Out. Who do you think your show actually appeals to more? Women or men?
For us, the show appeals to more women because they are curious about how a guy thinks in certain situations and how the male minds are different and similar to their own boyfriend or husband.
Most shows usually only appeal to one type of audience. How are you guys able to transcend borders, not just of gender, but even of class?
We think it was more of us being real and people relating to one or all of us. What we talk about are things that everyone goes through. No matter what class. Student, working, and love problems which everyone likes to talk about.
What’s your secret to covering emotional topics, and even trending cheesy hashtags on Twitter, without looking like sissies? Not many guys can do that on a regular basis without losing part of their dignity.
Our take on cheesy topics is unique because we give three different opinions and we also can agree on what’s funny or not. We’ve had our experience and we’ll talk about and impart what we’ve learned. We can be funny and serious about a topic and that’s the reason why we can get away with it. It's like an ultimate spcial overload pizza, the cheesy topic is the base amd our listeners' opinions and our comments are the toppings which make it the perfect pizza for the barkada.
You’ve said before that it’s highly improbable that you can stay on BNO and make a relationship work at the same time. We, however, don’t believe in sacrifices. Do you think you could possibly find a girl who can, um, handle it?
Yes, it is possible but the girl has to be independent and have her own career going. She can’t let whatever we are talking about get to her. It’s a tough search because girls here let things get to them easily.
How are you guys outside the radio show? Do you all hang out together? How? Any group dates like movies, chilling at home, etc.?
Outside radio we really do hang out but most of the time, it’s for work. But it doesn’t seem like work because it’s more of a “hanging out†feel. You’re shooting the breeze with the boys (ha-ha). If we have a chance to hang out, it’s usually after the show, watching TV at the station and talking about ideas for the show and business. The funniest topics come up when we are eating. Like the other day, we dialed Greenwich delivery and as we were eating the lasagna, the topic of #HallPass came up and the reaction from the listeners was fun and informative.
We assume that you’re now lady experts, but have you ever creeped a girl out just because you didn’t know the proper way to woo a woman? How?
SLICK: It’s probably happened a few times because I’m the quiet type and sometimes the girl might think I’m suplado.
How often do you think it happens that a perfectly decent guy is tagged as creepy just because he didn’t know how to go about it?
It probably happens a lot because guys’ expectations and reality don’t meet up and in the guy’s mind, it may have played out well with the girl but in reality, the action was deemed “creepy.â€
So how do you go about getting the girl?
We each have our own styles, it’s something that you can’t put into words but when we see it, we know.
What catches and holds your attention?
An intelligent girl who’s strong-willed and independent. Knowing what she wants and she goes out and gets it.
Have you ever flirted with someone you weren’t really interested in? Like, you just happened to be bored or something?
No. We don’t want to make paasa… it will make you look bad.
How unbreakable do you consider the bro code to be?
The BNO Code is unbreakable. It started out with a bond of friendship and respect. Everything else is easy to know and understand.
