Apply for the Silliman National Writers Workshop
MANILA, Philippines - Everybody wants to be a writer, but only a few dare to become one. Those brave souls who put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) should try their luck at the Silliman National Writers Workshop. The workshop is the longest running literary workshop in the country and has hosted some of the best Filipino writers such as Krip Yuson, Ricky Lee, Butch Dalisay, Danton Remoto, Lourd de Veyra, and Miguel Syjuco.
The 12 selected fellows will stay in Dumaguete for 19 days to hone and improve their craft from a panel of experts. To qualify, interested applicants must submit their manuscripts in either the fiction and creative non-fiction category before Jan. 15, 2013. Check their Facebook page for more details, and start writing the next political and social satire like Jose Rizal. There sure is a lot of material.
Rock and roll for Pablo survivors
Rock Ed Radio’s “Rock The Riles” is one of the station’s most anticipated events of the year, but this time, they’re postponing the concerts to gather donations for those affected by Typhoon Pablo in Davao. The program is partnering with Route 196 in Katipunan to collect clothes, towels and blankets tomorrow and on Monday. Christmas is only a week away and it will be a good idea to spread a little of the holiday cheer and help those in need.
Go vintage at the Analog Swap Meet
In the days of high-speed Internet and futuristic advances in technology, it’s strange how people are embracing the past. In photography, vintage filters are the rage, along with analog cameras. Find yourself attracted to those effects? Drop by the Analog Swap Meet, hosted by Rangefinder Filipinas and participate in the sale, auction, and swap of classic cameras, prints, and vinyl records. Rangefinder Filipinas is the country’s first and only classic photography community, so you know you’re dealing with people who know what they’re talking about. Visit Fotofabrik Studio, Scout Tuazon corner Scout Lozano, Quezon City at 10 a.m. to join the festivities.
Buy stuff from your fave bloggers
You know you have to come when some of the country’s biggest fashion bloggers decide to gather for the weekend and have a gigantic sale. These style icons are putting up Bloggers United 4 today and tomorrow, a two-day shopping marathon of their items. Some of the bloggers whose booths you should be checking out are Paul Jatayna and AJ Omandac of OS Accessories, Gelo Arucan and his avant-garde accessories, Divine Lee and Victor Basa for their luxurious clothes, JP Singson for his androgynous-wear, and Helga Weber for her quirky stuff. Dress like your favorite bloggers at World Trade Center and get those unique finds you can’t get at the mall.
Watch ‘The Hobbit’ in HFR
Peter Jackson shot The Hobbit in cutting-edge 3D HFR (high frame rate) — this means 48 frames per second instead of the standard 24. It’s never been done before, and there are only a limited number of movie houses in the world capable of showing it this way. Thankfully (and surprisingly), we have 10 of them in the Philippines. As of press time, theaters confirmed to play The Hobbit in HFR are at Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 3, Greenhills, Robinsons Ermita, Robinsons Galleria, SM Cebu, SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall, SM North Edsa and SM Southmall. Watch now before the deluge of MMFF entries comes.
