- Koji Arsua - The Philippine Star

MANILA,Philippines - Life imitates art, and our local film industry proves this, with actresses getting involved in fights and rivalries, real and reel, that are sometimes stranger than fiction. Whether it is done to push ratings or to create discussion (and arguments) among fans, rivalries are old hat in the entertainment scene. Here are some of our favorite catfights from the last three decades.

Nora Aunor vs. Vilma Santos

The Nora-Vilma rivalry was so big that it spawned nicknames for its fans: the Noranians and Vilmanians. It began when Nora entered showbiz, upstaging the mestiza Vilma with her homegrown appeal. Nora starred in intense films such as Bona, Himala, and The Flor Contemplacion Story, while Vilma took on risqué roles such as Relasyon, Burlesk Queen, and Sister Stella L. Funnily, it is the fans who fuel the rivalry, because the actresses have admitted to being friends. In fact, just last year, Nora admitted to having a crush on Vilma.

Winner: None. Vilma is like the prep school girl with the perfect life while Nora is the hipster who does what she wants. Both cool.

Dawn Zulueta vs. Gretchen Barretto

The Dawn-Gretchen feud allegedly began in on the set of a shampoo commercial, where La Greta brought along an entire wardrobe in Louis Vuitton trunks, along with a microwave. Rumor has it that Dawn confronted, and Gretchen told her, “You’re not rich.” But Dawn had the last laugh when she answered “You’re not married.” The two have not made up.

Winner: Gretchen’s larger-than-life personality makes her a favorite among divas, but Dawn has gotten richer, thanks in part to the Walang Hanggan craze, with merchandise such as an infinity ring, necklace, wine, and a dedicated channel. Also, Gretchen still isn’t married.

Sharon Cuneta vs. Maricel Soriano

When Viva Films and Regal Films were shaking up the industry, its two biggest stars competed for the top position. Both had their charms: Sharon was the rich girl who still empathized with the masses, and Maricel shone in comedy, eventually earning the title “Taray Queen.” Both did comedy, drama, earning awards for their stellar acting. Their fans push the rivalry, with both actresses being friends.

Winner: Maricel doesn’t seem to age, but when you’re given P1 billion for one talk show on TV5, Sharon definitely has it made.
