Screen queens
MANILA, Philippines - It was Russian acting guru Konstantin Stanislavsky who said there are no small roles, only small actors. But Philippine showbiz revolves around big roles and big actors. From Gloria Romero to Nora Aunor and from Vilma Santos to Kim Chiu, our country is ruled by queens of the screen, and their reigns have no sign of stopping. Who are the belles in the last decade who have occupied the thrones? Here’s a Supreme rundown of their highnesses.
Anne Curtis
How she started: The Aussie stunner was approached by an agent while she was eating in a fastfood chain. Not everyone is lucky enough to look gorgeous while eating burgers and fries, making her every girl’s peg. She is also down-to-earth, making her a media darling.
Typical roles: Rich girls, balikbayans, and immigrants. Basically any role that requires a beautiful face.
10 years from now: She’ll either quit showbiz and go on a world tour promoting her music, or go the indie route and play a poor person. We can’t guarantee her success, but we’ll still love her.
Marian Rivera
How she started: It was her role in Marimar that catapulted her to fame, followed by Dyesebel, Amaya, and Darna. Her filmography isn’t as impressive but when you think of the scandals she’s faced and the terrified actresses that faced her, you wonder why she always gets the leading roles.
Typical roles: The most important female role in any GMA teleserye. Despite her reputation as the queen of catfights, she never fails to top-bill any show, bring in the ratings, and scare the living shit out of her female co-stars.
10 years from now: She will quit showbiz and open up a studio dedicated to Dingdong Dantes’ films, where she will watch over his every move.
Sarah Geronimo
How she started: She won in Star for a Night 2002 and became one of the most successful singers in the country, holding a packed concert at the Smart Araneta Coliseum at 17. She has branched out to acting and hosting, and is one of the celebrities with the cleanest track record.
Typical roles: Teenybopper roles that match her spotless reputation.
10 years from now: Her friendliness will wear off and she will become a diva. But old habits die hard; she will continue to use po as she demands only blue M&M’s for her next concert tour.
Kim Chiu
How she started: The chubby and nerdy girl in Pinoy Big Brother Teens Edition. She was shy and adorable, but showbiz sucked her in and she now holds the title of Teen Queen and Thin Queen.
Typical roles: Cute but nerdy roles, which began in First Day High. Let’s face it, she’s still adorable.
10 years from now: She’ll play a hot science teacher who falls in love with a student. Very Notes on a Scandal.
Angel Locsin
How she started: By baring her body in GMA’s Mulawin.
Typical roles: Rich and aloof girls. She has a sexy innocence that doesn’t border on sleazy. She was every modern girl’s icon in UnOfficially Yours, where she enjoyed one-night stands. The CBCP would be mad.
10 years from now: She will make a few movies, but she will focus on becoming a soccer mom. Her kids’ classmates’ dads will ogle during PTAs.
Toni Gonzaga
How she started: She was that girl that shouted “I love you, Piolo” for everyone to hear.
Typical roles: Boyish and kenkoy roles, especially in D’Anothers, My Big Love, and My Amnesia Girl. She also does a lot of hosting, notable of which are The Buzz and Pinoy Big Brother.
10 years from now: It will be revealed that she is, in fact, Big Brother.
Cristine Reyes
How she started: By being Ara Mina’s sister.
Typical roles: Bombshells. Her sweet face betrays a sexy aura, hence her roles in Eva Fonda and Reputasyon. She decided to go the other way and played the virginal wife in No Other Woman, but that didn’t really turn out well, especially when she threatened to kill her husband’s mistress and joked about putting poison in her food.
10 years from now: She’ll be pulling off a Dina Bonnevie and pose topless in FHM in her 30s.
Bea Alonzo
How she started: She started in teleseryes, graduating to films after following the three-month rule. For the uninitiated, it’s a rule where you have to wait three months before starting again.
Typical roles: Hopeless romantics, but she will forever be remembered for her portrayal of you, a.k.a Basha.
10 years from now: She will still be happily married to Popoy..
