Rainy Days Recipe of the Week: The deep-fried Kool-Aid balls

MANILA, Philippines - Looks can really be deceiving and if you don’t look close enough, you won’t really notice the difference between Joseph Bitangcol and midget comedian Mura’s facial features. That said, you know not to be fooled by fried Kool-Aid and its close resemblance to oversized kwek-kwek. Yep, you got that right, Kool-Aid can now be deep fried. We haven’t tasted this fried liquid food find just yet since it’s only available in California, but making our own seems feasible enough. The original recipe is by Charlie “Chicken” Boghosian, a businessman from San Diego and it includes water, flour and Kool-Aid powder mixed together to form a batter. It is then scooped out and deep-fried to kwek-kwek perfection, sans the quail egg. We’re scheduling our taste test (will it work just as well with Tang?) any day this rainy season, but we’re still trying to develop the perfect recipe for Supreme’s plain-salted salabat cookies.

Season Finale of the Week: ‘Game of Thrones’

The show that had fans of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice, a seven-book fantasy series wherein the first is entitled Game of Thrones, with their fingers poised on their mouse pads to download ripped episodes of the HBO series has finally come to spectacular conclusion. While we’d rather not drop spoilers for fans who haven’t finished their downloads, the final episode drew in three million viewers to their TV sets in the US. Factor in the fan downloads and you’ve got a solid following for the next season. Although the premiere of the highly-anticipated show was initially disappointing with the 2.2 million views, HBO execs preached patience, stating it was a grower, not a shower (we’d insert a d*ck crack right here, but it’s too easy). Considering all the nudity, violence and er, nudity, we find this initial finding surprising.

Sudden Death of the Week: Ryan Dunn

After Heath Ledger and Michael Jackson, another sudden celebrity death shocks Hollywood and its outskirts via the passing of MTV’s Ryan Dunn. The actor, of Jackass fame, was 34 years old. Dunn posted a picture of him drinking hours before his car slammed into a tree and burst into flames, killing him and his passenger on the spot. Co-workers and friends in the industry took their grief to Twitter, tweeting their thoughts about Dunn’s passing. Bam Margera, one of Dunn’s closest pals and co-star, also got involved in a Twitter war with Roger Ebert, after the latter posted in his Twitter account, “Friends don’t let Jackasses drink and drive.” The tweet was met with criticism all over the world, with Mommy Dionisia Pacquiao again airing her take on the tragedy: “Yong malaswa! Gusto ko yung pakialaman niyo yung malaswaaaa!” (That punchline never grows old.)

Fashion Collaboration of the Week: Versace X H&M

Donatella Versace’s decision to collaborate with the popular Swiss retail giant H&M comes at a time when the fashion house’s popularity is currently enjoying an upswing. After previously stating in 2008 she would never let Versace go mass out of fear that it would “confuse” the luxury brand, she has happily changed her mind with the release date of the capsule collection this November and a pre-spring collection available online on January 19, 2012. The line will include 40 women’s garments consisting of dresses with studded leather, silk and bright prints, while the 20-piece men’s line focuses on tailoring and will even include a tuxedo. Ladies accessories and homeware pieces are also slated for release. Now, if only we could get H&M to collaborate with the Sys, the Gokongweis or the Tantocos in time for the launch...

RH Advocates’ Choice Award: The erection boosting condom

If God hates condoms, we’re not sure who answered the prayers of men with erectile dysfunction. Contraceptive (or abortifacient, depends if you’re talking to Carlos Celdran or Bishop Bacani) manufacturer and industry big player Futura Medical recently received approval from the European Union to sell in its member territories their latest offering after their Durex line of condoms: the CSD500. Clinically tested prior to release, the CSD500 promises a bigger and firmer erection to anyone who wears it (provided you have a schlong, of course), lending a helping hand to those with sexual dysfunctions. The condom contains specially concocted gel in its tip that causes the penile arteries to dilate, hence increasing the blood flow in the male organ. Though unclear if this could already replace Viagra, we know a few people who are willing to try this new product.

Massive Event of the Week: Global Smurfs Day

We don’t remember who said that if Ruffa Gutierrez were blue, she would make a tall, pretty smurf. Today, however, we say that if Mahal were blue, she’d be a cross between a smurf and a Na’vi avatar. In fact, she would fit right in with the hundreds of thousands of people today gathering all over the world to celebrate Global Smurfs Day. Initiated by Sony as part of the promotions for the release of The Smurfs 3D movie due next month, the gathering aims to break the current Guinness World Record for the Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs. Twelve cities will be participating in this massive movement today, though Manila is not included (sorry, Mahal). However, if you still wanna join, you are free to bathe yourself in tina and wear a baker’s hat.
