Best of the week: Manny, 'Maven,' models, and the morgue
Millionaire of the Week: Manny Pacquiao
Manila, Philippines - After making it to the Forbes’ List of the Highest Paid Athletes in the World for 2009, the Magnolia Milk-raised boxer from Saranggani province is again recognized as the Best Paid Athlete for 2010 by ESPN. The PacMan is tied with New York Yankees superstar Alex Rodriguez in the first place, who both raked in $32M last year, making David Beckham’s annual income seem like loose change.
DJ of the Week: Mo Twister
Superstar DJ Mo Twister, after TV, radio, and podcasts, now finds himself conquering another industry — this time, publishing. This week, Mo tweeted, “The Men’s Health (USA) will be a regular gig. I will be giving love/relationship/sex advice on Men’s Health all the way from the Philippines!”
New Rag of the Week: Maven
This month, ABS-CBN Publishing launched its latest title, Maven, with Georgina Wilson on the cover. Sample cover lines? “Are you a tunay na chick?” Georgina Wilson? “A makamasang socialite,” of course. So there you have it. Either Maven magazine is our first Taglish glossy or the first title that caters to our transgendered brothers and sisters.
Real Model of the Week: Jessica Yang
Local RTW brand Plains & Prints deserves some kudos for keeping up the practice of using a real model for their billboards despite a celebrity-obsessed industry. For its latest campaign, they hired the services of top young model Jessica Yang. Centered on the country’s humid summer atmosphere, P&P’s 2011 collection revolves on warm colors and nature prints that create a very chic yet playful look. Here’s hoping other brands follow suit and the faces of the new crop of top models (Jessica, Jasmine Maierhofer, Pauline Prieto, etc.) are on billboards more often.
Reality Show of the Week: The Voice
Everyone’s been raving about The Voice, NBC’s Idol counterpart, since its premiere this week. Hosted by Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, soul genius Cee-Lo Green, diva bar none Christina Aguilera and country star Blake Shelton, the show is a singing contest like no other. Auditions are done with the contestants behind the judges’ backs, meaning looks will never affect the judges’ decision. This week, as part of the promos for the show, a video of the judges’ performing Crazy was posted on YouTube, showcasing a panel that can actually outperform the talents they judge (looking at you, Jennifer Lopez).
