From Arcade Fire to Uma Khouny: Supreme's Best of the Week
Court Decision of the Week: Prop 8 No H8 Vaughn R. Walker—remember that name.
MANILA, Philippines - Last Thursday, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and their fans had reason to celebrate as Judge Walker struck down California’s voter-approved ban on same sex marriage, popularly known as Prop 8. Gaga said it best when she tweeted, “REJOICE and CELEBRATE gay communities and straight all over the world. Our voices are being heard! Loud! SCREAM LOUD AMERICANOS!” And just like that, the world simultaneously danced to Bad Romance.
Song of the Week: Di Ako Bakla by Uma Khouny
And right on cue, Uma Khouny has finally admitted that he’s not straight. In an interview with Cristy Fermin last week, Uma dropped the bomb and came out clean, admitting he’s kissed a man before and that “he can do both ways.” The press in attendance roared to applause for his courage, with him adding that he did not date or enter relationships with girls for he did not want to use them as symbols for his heterosexuality. We’re still trying to get reactions from Cassandra Ponti and Say Alonzo, both previously linked to the actor/host. Uma, meanwhile, is reported to do a Tuesday Vargas revival, Di Ako Bakla, Bisexual Po Ako.
Viral Video of the Week:
Cebu inmates dance Bieber
After getting a taste of Hollywood when they did Michael Jackson’s Thriller, there’s no stopping the Cebu inmates from attaining fame behind bars. Lindsay Lohan, start taking notes. This week, the dancing mainstays from the Cebu Provincial Jail released their latest calisthenics scheme, this time dancing to teen hermaprodhite (just kidding!) Justin Bieber’s hit single Baby. They also did other songs, including Apologize (done in masks in imitation of the Jabawockees) and the K-Pop hit Fire by 2NE1. Watch here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xb6WaU7kI2g
Leak of the Week: Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs
After months of Ke$h, Arcade Fire comes back to restore some dignity in our iPod earphones. After tackling sociopolitical and religious issues in 2007’s Neon Bible comes back to the home front with this year’s The Suburbs, albeit suburbs in the Twilight Zone. BBC has already called it their OK Computer, while Spin name-dropped Sonic Youth. Welcome the album of the year.
Your-life-is-a-lie Discovery of the Week: Researchers discover fossil of a human older than Tabon Man
In the kind of epic discovery to rival that of Pluto’s demotion from planet status, evidence has emerged that humans could have been inhabiting the Philippines way before Tabon Man. What’s next? We’re all colorblind and the sky is green? It’s enough to make a guy feel like he’s living in the Truman Show.
Best-timed Use of Man Meat on a Magazine Cover of the Week: Details’ Joseph Gordon-Levitt cover
After the world’s collective gushing for Inception and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s suspenders-rocking turn, Details capitalizes on the Bieber-level hysteria by putting Leo’s main man on their typically sexually-ambiguous magazine’s August cover. A year after a botched attempt in the GI Joe reboot, JGL finally transitions from fey to butch with his gruff portrayal of Arthur, leaving the pants of many a Zooey Deschanel wannabe soaked wet.
Mother, Where is Father? Award of the Week: Kris Aquino
Coming home to host the newest noontime show on TV, Kris Aquino was also welcomed to Philippine shores by the controversy she left weeks ago: her separation from the state, err, husband James Yap. “The only person that I will owe an explanation to is my son,” she once said. Granting an interview to best friend Boy Abunda, Kris appealed to James to stop dragging the late President Cory into the issue, saying they both knew long ago that they are no longer happy to be together. James did not give any more press statements, though he was seen bonding with son Baby James after a basketball game. Because of Kris’ courage to talk about this in public (“Bagong hiwalay ka din ba?” she asks one contestant in her show.), we give her the Mother, Where Is Father? award. For when Baby James is old enough to ask her that question, we’re sure she’s very prepared to answer it. “May laro, anak.”
Morning Talk Show Revelation of the Week: ROTC, the Resurrection
You don’t expect too many big things on a morning show, else it would be moved to primetime. But this week was different. The AFP expressed its plan to have ROTC reinstated as a mandatory course for college students. Due to the dwindling number of reservists in the army, the AFP is thinking of suggesting the reimposition of the course, to at least bulk up the Armed Forces’ reserved cadets. This has met much opposition though, coming from the student sector. High school seniors from the Vice Ganda Fans Club have expressed indignation over the proposed move, citing a culture of violence that may be cultivated in the colleges. They are now collecting a million signatures to stop ROTC from being imposed again, and they began in Baclaran.
