What did 2015 teach you that you’ll carry on this year?

Every new year is a fresh start to do the things we want to do and accomplish all our dreams. The past year has left us with so many lessons and memories to carry on in the Year of the Monkey.

As we welcome 2016 in this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, let us live our lives choosing to please our Lord.

Some of the lessons I’ve learned in 2015 (and that I would like to relearn every year) are: gratitude changes your perspective; and yes, health is wealth. Coming from a place in our hearts with gratitude (as opposed to a constant feeling of lack) has taught me to accept that everything happens for a reason, and that if you can view challenges from a point of gratitude then you will definitely be more at peace with yourself and better prepared to take on what comes your way with positivity, focus and passion.

This year, I was diagnosed with elevated A1C levels (6.6) to that of a diabetic (above 6.4) which, although considered low, I wanted to reverse without the need for medication. I embarked on a diet and exercise regimen that brought my A1C levels down to 6 in three months’ time. Although I am still “lower-borderline,” I had to relearn that what I eat and having regular exercise should really be my first priority, and that I was fortunate enough to be in a position to create my own borders, limits and graciously say “no” to protect my well-being.

The journey may be short but the road to patience is long. For us senior citizens, a 10-kilometer trip home at times take almost three hours. So just relax, have a meal, not with Visa, Mastercard or American Express, but with your senior citizen card. It could be worse.

In 2015 I learned that there is joy and satisfaction in solitude, as there is in the company of others. The adventure of discovering a new place, whether deep in nature or in the pockets of an oasis right in the city, is enriching to the soul. Meditation is important in centering oneself.  U-Jam class (hip-hop funky dance fitness) is fun; breaking a good sweat feels great. Authentic friendships know no time, distance or labels. Home is nowhere, yet everywhere; it is truly in the heart. Love begins with oneself. Lather yourself with the best shower gel and soap you can find; chamomile and black charcoal body wash detoxifies and promotes sleep. Don’t make rash decisions out of fear or spite, but if you do make one, be humble and find a way to make up for it. When your emcee messes up the cue card, pray that you have a damn good producer and director who can save the situation. I want to become a healer; wounded healers have great empathy. And when the going gets tough, God sends guardian angels to the rescue. Be thankful.

2015 was a very tough year for me — well, at least it started out that way. What I really learned is that God has the final say in everything. He will not give you anything that you cannot handle. When you let Him take care of everything, you will find wisdom as to why things don’t always go as you planned.... because He has The Plan. When you accept that God has His reasons you will live a happier life.

The year 2015 taught me that God listens to prayers and that miracles do happen. Patience, perseverance and unconditional love are essential qualities for peaceful family and personal relationships. Letting go but not giving up. Forgiveness and art always heal the spirit and the heart. I’m very grateful for all the blessings in my life — the gift of love and support from my family and close friends, and divine inspiration for my art.

2015 was a milestone year for me. It was the year I turned 50. There must be something mystical when one turns 50. For me, at least, it’s like my perspective and priorities changed overnight. All of a sudden, I realized my mortality; I wanted to live longer so I can spend more time with my children Gabbie (14) and Paolo (10).  So I made a conscious effort to be healthier. I started walking 40 minutes every morning, watched my diet (limited my pork and beef intake) and made sure I got at least eight hours of sleep every night. While walking, it’s also my quiet time. I pray the rosary and surrender to Him all my troubles and worries, but most of all, to give thanks for all His wonderful blessings. After all, a grateful heart is a happy heart. At the end of the day — when we have peace within — we have healed all our past hurts and broken relationships.

2015 taught me that you can’t do everything and it’s okay.

Life is a constant learning experience but three key and recurring lessons for me would be to be grateful for every single blessing, big or small, each and every day. To think positive and surround yourself with people who radiate positive energy. To try your best and keep the faith, even during challenging times because God knows best and He will always make things work out better than you can ever imagine.

Here are my thoughts. That silence and looking within can give us the best answers to the many questions we face every day. Detachment and letting go are choices we can make as we embrace freedom and serenity in our lives. “I choose to be happy.” This phrase has been a mantra to guide me during my darkest moments.
