Is your home rain-ready?

MANILA, Philippines - Extreme weather changes, seesawing from scorching heat to torrential rains, can cause considerable damage to one’s home.

Is your roof ready for the heavy rains? Checking for possible signs of trouble is the first step. Check the ridges for any cracks or leaks that can weaken the walls and ceilings; then conduct a routine inspection for any holes or rusty spots. Make sure there are no loose or missing shingles and reseal the coatings and remedy defective portions before they destroy the interior and exterior areas of the house.

Inspect the ceilings for signs of leak. If there are “water rings,” damp spots or discolorations, make the necessary repairs immediately. Deal with your doors and windows too. And because rains may cause flooding especially in low-lying areas, it’s best to check your drainage system and your toilet and bath for water-related problems. Make sure the sewage system is clean and is working efficiently.

While there’s still time to prepare, cut down dead tree limbs and heavy branches and fix broken fences and gates so these won’t be dislodged and damage any part of the house during a storm. In case of prolonged power outage, a generator would be a good buy so your core appliances will be operational.  Have your flashlights, weather radio and at least two emergency rechargeable lamps and fresh batteries ready and remember to have a first-aid kit and ample food and water in store at all times.

During Benjie’s recent visit to Handyman in  Robinsons Galleria, the basketball superstar-turned-actor purchased different products in preparation for the rainy season.  He was seen buying flashlights and emergency lamps in case of brown-outs, various tools and implements for home repair and even a water purifier add to his stock of basic necessities.

When the rains come, stay indoors and monitor the weather, Paras suggested. “We stay home, watch the news and grab the chance for a home movie, board games, swap stories and basically catch up on things we missed when we were all busy,” he added.
