Being a parent is not easy. It’s not always perfect but the joy it brings us is immeasurable. The challenges and responsibilities of honing another human in being a good Christian are great but the fulfillment it gives us is so much greater. Being a mom to three wonderful children has put order in my life. Being the best example I can be to my kids, teaching them how strong prayers can lead one’s life to something good, knowing when to be strict and when to hold back has also taught me how to become the person I am now. Ever since I was in high school, being a parent has been my dream and I thank God and my kids for making this dream come true.

Becoming a parent multiplied and magnified everything. Suddenly the implications of all my choices and actions were “raised to the highest power!†(Remember algebra?) Benefits, consequences, pains, and of course, joys, a hundred times over. Oh, yes, the bills as well. But my “Dad above" has got me covered, so I chill.

Being a parent gave my life meaning and purpose. Being a man for others is part of the Xavier education and is the core value of public service, but this truly became real for me when I became a father. Now I know that to love and care for the three little kids God has given me is really my purpose in life and is what defines my whole being. Everything flows from my love for my kids, and everything is for the love of my kids. How can one serve the public well when he can’t even serve his children, or make sacrifices for them, scrimp, save, and put aside one’s self for them? And what is the point of amassing wealth and power when one mosquito bite can take away that which you love the most? Being a parent is very humbling and puts everything in perspective. At the end of the day, regardless of status, wealth or power, nothing beats the pure joy of coming home to three happy kids and my loving wife Paula.

It changed my life 180 degrees. When I was single I thought only of myself and now I am my last priority. Through my children I have learned so much about life. Patience is a virtue, love is unconditional and prayers play a big role.

There are no words really to express how being a parent has changed my life. It is God’s most precious gift to me and I cannot thank him enough. Every day has more joy, more meaning and more purpose now that I am a mother. When I look at my children and my wonderful husband, I still cannot believe how blessed I am. I choose to always count our blessings and I never dwell on challenges that come our way.

“There is no greater position or power than that of a mother.†A woman after God’s own heart is first and foremost what a woman should be. As a mother I cannot impart what I don’t have so it was vital for me to nurture a fierce passion for God’s wisdom in my own heart. I had to lead by example and had to take daily opportunities to plant God’s words through love and spending time with them. I realized as they are growing that they have the gift of choice and when they make big steps in their lives I pray that they would not forsake my teachings . I know I will not be here forever to be their guide but I believe God’s words will not return in vain.

I learned to become selfless. I will give my life to my kids. I also learned about what really matters in life, the ultimate success is to see all your kids growing up healthy, happy and successful in their own fields. I love my kids.

Being a parent made me more responsible in my actions because everything I do will affect and reflect on my daughter. I’m not saying I won’t commit mistakes but I will always do my best to rise above them and be strong for myself and my daughter.

Six years ago, when I was pregnant, I immediately began thinking of how to incorporate a child in my always-planned life, not realizing that where kids are involved, there is no such thing as a perfect plan. Today, despite the chaos of running after two kids, I find that my life has more order and direction in the sense that my priorities are crystal clear. It is easier for me to focus on what has to be done and to move on from non-essentials.With regard to myself, I’ve learned to be much more patient and have discovered that I am capable of loving much more than I ever could.
