Getting our children to love sports is important. Why? Because sports not only keeps us fit physically and mentally but it also molds children into becoming well-rounded individuals since sports promotes discipline, team work and sportsmanship. Nowadays, top companies prefer to hire athletes because they are good under pressure, are quick thinkers and always ready to face any hurdle that may come their way. With so many sports nowadays, finding the best sport that will be good for our children is a challenge. Lets read on to learn what some sports personalities want their children to learn.

Triathlon has changed my life and I’d like my son Jose to excel in it. He is only 11 and has the youth and all the time to fulfill his potential. He can even be an Olympian. My regret is not discovering triathlon when I was younger. Jose can be the best triathlete he can be.

I guess I am fortunate that despite my not being inclined toward sports, all my children have found their own interest, and there is not a chance I could possibly influence them. My eldest son occasionally visits the gym, my second son is active with his alumni basketball and my eldest daughter surprisingly does boxing to stay fit. And the youngest daughter is so into her dancing. And I am just glad they didn’t have to follow my unhealthy style.

Since I am a Karate-ka black belt Ni-dan (second level), it would be great if all of my children followed suit. First, so we all share a sport that will bond our family. Second, for their own defense and protection from the bad elements anywhere and everywhere. And lastly, Karate is not a mere martial art but rather it focuses on and enhances one’s discipline and self-control. However, I still encourage them to engage in many other sports activities.

It would either be running or Muay Thai. Running, because it is a sport they’ll be able to do without anyone, which means they can do it anytime, at their own convenience. That would also mean there is more of a possibility they can do it more often. They can do it any time of the day too, all they need is a good pair of rubber shoes and the joy of doing it. Muay Thai because it is, in my experience, a sport where you use not only your hands, but also your elbows, feet, legs, and knees. Kompleto ika nga. If you want a good cardiovascular workout, this is it. Better yet, it teaches you self-defense moves. I’d like my children to know how to defend themselves if needed.

My two boys — Ronin and C2 — are into basketball and I must say I’m happy they are so into it because it helps them build endurance, improves coordination and most of all develops concentration and discipline. As for my only girl Arielle, I want her to learn how to swim. It helps lower stress, gives her higher spirit and a better brain. It will also be my bonding with her as I love swimming.
