Understanding natural and synthetic dyes workshop set

MANILA, Philippines - As part of its educational series on materials, The Lopez Memorial Museum will hold a workshop on natural and synthetic dyes on Jan. 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The workshop will center on the country’s rich tradition of extracting and using natural dyes such as those used by ethnic groups like the Ifugao, Mandaya, Itneg, and T’boli.

Engineer Adela Montalvo, senior research specialist of the technical services division of the Philippine Textile Research Institute under the DOST, will facilitate the workshop.

The participants are expected to gain basic technical knowledge on the extraction and application of natural dyes on textiles as well as different types of chemical dyes and dyeing processes. The current usage of synthetic dyes and how these are utilized to improve the means of caring for our tangible cultural heritage will also be discussed.

There are only 20 slots available for the workshop. The fee of P2,200 covers meals, an afternoon snack and a certificate.

The Lopez Memorial Museum is at the ground floor, Benpres Building, Exchange Road corner Meralco Avenue, Pasig City. Museum days and hours are Mondays to Saturdays, except holidays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
