After Dolphy's death, Eric Quizon read uplifting, inspiring books

THE READING CLUB - Girlie Rodis - The Philippine Star

Eric Quizon was the face of calm during the whole ordeal of his father Dolphy’s intensive care period. Together with his father’s significant other, Zsa Zsa Padilla, they conducted themselves with utmost grace. They inspired many with their strength of character. In those sad days, as we celebrated Dolphy’s life and mourned his passing, we saw in TV tributes how he touched the lives of many people. All the TV networks aired specials on his illustrious career and life.

This Wednesday in a final unprecedented tribute the three major networks ABS-CBN 2, GMA7 and TV5 are joining hands in producing a concert at the SM Arena entitled Alay Tawa in Dolphy’s memory. The Sy family is donating the use of the arena for this musical concert.

I asked Eric during a break at the press lunch to share some of his favorite books.

1) The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling. “I have always been fond of sorcery and magical plots.”

2) Alexander McCall Smith series The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Tears of the Giraffe, Morality for Beautiful Girls and The Kalahari School for Men. “As a kid my secret ambition was to become a detective, but apart from that these books are charming, honest and uplifting. A very easy read.”

3) The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.

“Complicated but gripping. You just don’t want to put it down.”

4) The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. “I read this book again after my dad died. Uplifting. Makes you understand the meaning of life. To quote from the book, ‘All endings are also beginnings... We just don’t know it at that time.’”

5) Hindi Ko Ito Narating Mag-Isa by Bibeth Orteza. “An irreverent submission of a man from humble beginnings to what he has made himself. An inspiring book from a man that I consider my hero.”

My own personal read this week is 10 Mindful Minutes by Goldie Hawn available in all branches of National Bookstore. Oprah from Emerald Headway is still my favorite magazine.
