What's your favorite song?

WORDS WORTH - Mons Romulo -

We often find that music can lift us or take us back to the past. Songs have the power to alter our moods, make us happy or even make us sad. Here are personalities with the songs they sing and hum to.

Karylle, singer/actress I love Broadway music! Nothing like singing those songs that belong to a story. Plus, I’ve loved them since I was a kid. Thank God for Glee, a lot of people are starting to appreciate them again.

Tippi Ocampo, fashion designer Growing up in the ’80s, many of my favorite tunes are from that era — from pop to new wave, punk rock to glam rock. These days I enjoy a wide variety of music but many of the songs I actually listen to are by singer/songwriters like Natasha Bedingfield or Jamie Cullum because I enjoy the way they write the lyrics. My husband and I are opposites in that way — he loves the beauty of the melody first and the lyrics second, while I love the poetry of the lyrics first and the melody second.

Tina Montinola Gonzalez, senior product manager, Smart Communications I like alternative rock. I like listening to the music of U2, Coldplay, Greenday, Angels & Airwaves, The Script, Snow Patrol, etc. I grew up on alternative music. This genre relaxes me and helps me unwind especially after a busy day at work or when I’m stuck in traffic.

Rocky Flores, mother Love songs because they hit you straight in the heart. I was so happy that after our 20-plus years of marriage, my husband Homer finally wrote a beautiful love song, Dahil Ikaw Ang Mahal Ko, for me. This song is included in our daughter, Hanna’s, first self-titled album.

Representative Irwin Tieng, Buhay Party List Ocean Drive by Lighthouse Family. It’s not really the meaning. This song takes me back to my high school days, when life was less complicated. The memories it brings never fails to cheer me up when I’m down.

Tweetie de Leon-Gonzalez, mom jewelry designer Just one song? It’s pure torture to name just one. I have hundreds of favorite tunes to choose from — from old school to new beats that suit my mood. I listen to a lot of EBTG’s songs. They’re cool and subtle to the ear and the lyrics kind of hit close to home. Sting’s Fragile and Mad About You are big favorites of mine, too. And his version of Windmills of Your Mind is unabatedly sexy.

Mary de Leon, grandmother and scuba diver One of my favorite songs is Sapagkat Kami ay Tao Lamang by National Artist Levi Celerio, who was born on April 30, 1910. He died on April 2, 2002. I have liked this song for many decades since I was a teenager. I used to sing this song with my father, and it created a lot of fond memories.

Audie Gemora, TV 5 Talent Management and Development head

I like standards from the ‘30s to the ‘70s. Songs from those decades keep coming back. The lyrics were so well written and the melodies you can never tire of. Atty. Ed Malaya, DFA spokesperson

To start each morning with a clear mind, I listen to classical music airing on 98.7 FM (thank God for DZFE!). During long drives, the rhythmic beats of U2’s I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For; Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds; or Black Eyed Peas’ Bebot keep my eyes on the road ahead. When feeling the blues, there’s nothing more uplifting than sitting down on a piano and humming to myself Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World. Indeed, with the abiding love from one’s family members and the random kindness of even strangers, it is truly a wonderful world.

Carlo Orosa, singer, actor, talent manager

My favorite music is, of course, any song from the ‘80s and ‘70s like Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Earth, Wind and Fire, Dianne Reeves, etc., leaning more on pop, jazz and light rock music. Nothing heavy, just some comfort music familiar to my ears, something that I can unwind to, or can relieve me of my stress and problems for the day.
