Father's Day madness
MANILA, Philippines - I remember giving Dad a birthday card, which I made myself. I was a kid back then. I could tell from the smile on his face and the twinkle in his eyes that he liked it. I was so proud of myself being able to make such a masterpiece, but more than that I was able to make Dad happy.
One time I gave him a toothbrush. I thought he should replace his old one because its bristles already pointed in all directions. It did not occur to me how hilarious that one was — that he could actually buy his own toothbrush. Still Dad showed his big grateful smile and hugged me. I was 10 and I guess that was forgivable.
Then came the day when I ran out of gifts to give. I had a hard time musing over what Dad would like to receive. I had to think out of the box.
I realized there was more to Father’s Day than just giving presents. A card or a gift would be nice, but it’s not the only way to show my love and appreciation for him. I saw how I could touch Dad’s heart through simple ways, even without the gifts. Just a simple “I love you” whispered in his ear can make him smile. More so, he’s more than happy to see me growing up in grace and in character, a daughter whom he can be proud of.
I remember writing my very first composition, and singing it in front of the most wonderful and loving man I’ve ever met. Dad did not like it.
