MANILA, Philippines - Enjoy a day of reading with these newly released books at National Book Store: Mitch Albom’s Have a Little Faith and Audrey Niffenegger’s Her Fearful Symmetry.
Mitch Albom, bestselling author of Tuesdays with Morrie, writes a powerful nonfiction book in Have a Little Faith which is bound to challenge one’s thinking. It tells the story of two different men of different faiths. It begins when an 82-year-old rabbi, also from Albom’s hometown, asks him to deliver a eulogy.
This propels Albom to get to know the man better, and takes him back to a faith that he abandoned a long time ago. He also forms a relationship with a pastor from Detroit who is a reformed drug dealer and an addict.
As his friendship with the two men grow, Albom starts to observe how men of different faiths — Christian and Jewish — are able to use their beliefs in similar ways to cope with the challenges and pressures of life. And soon, these relationships enable him to dig deep into the issues the modern man faces, such as doubting God and the importance of faith during hard times. He finally realizes that what is important in all beliefs is being secure in the knowledge that there is something out there that’s bigger than yourself.
Audrey Niffenegger, author of the popular, best-selling novel The Time Traveler’s Wife, is also back with another haunting read. Set in and around Highgate Cemetery in London, Her Fearful Symmetry revolves around the life of American twins Julia and Valentina who are left with their Aunt Elspeth’s London apartment after her passing.
The twins, who seemingly have little interest in getting jobs or going to college, move into the apartment and get to know the other residents of the building — Martin, an intelligent crossword puzzle setter with obsessive compulsive disorder and his wife Marjike; Robert, who was once their Aunt Elspeth’s lover; and even their aunt herself.
Her Fearful Symmetry is an intense and eye-opening read that perfectly captures the beauty of sisterhood and kinship, love and identity, and the power of life, which can last long after death has arrived.
