Filipino music at its best

-

MANILA, Philippines – As we get closer to our Independence Day celebrations this June 12, the Mabuhay Singers will showcase Filipino musical artistry at its best with a performance on Sunday, June 7 at 6 p.m. at the Skydome.of the SM City North EDSA Skygarden.

The group is a combination of two famous trios in the late 50s — Tres Rosas composed of Carmen Camacho, Nora Hermosa, and Raye Lucero; and the Lover’s Trio composed of Ador Torres, Bert Legaspi, and Floro San Juan — and is known for their popularized folk, traditional, classic, and standard Filipino songs played on vinyl records.

Prominent singers and soloists like Ruben Tagalog, Alfred Larosa, Cely Bautista, Ric Manrique, Jr., Rita Rivera, Don David, Flor Ocampo, Noel Samonte, Betty Rivera, Robert Natividad, Chi Lucero and others became part of the group at one time.

Under musical director Leopoldo Silos, the Mabuhay Singers recorded more than a hundred long playing albums and singles from 1958 to the early ’70s. The group also toured the United States of America and Canada as part of the Department of Tourism’s Balikbayan project in 1973 to encourage Filipinos abroad to come and visit their native land.

The multi-awarded group has received a citation in 1973 for its all-time top-selling records, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Aliw Awards Foundation, and National Award of Recognition for actively promoting Philippine Language and Culture by the Philippine Language Commission.

Celebrate Filipino musical artistry with this rare performance of the well-loved Mabuhay Singers at the Skydome on Sunday, June 7 at 6 p.m.
