Everybody has one complaint these days: It’s too hot! The moment you step out of your air-conditioned office or car, you find yourself sweating profusely even if it’s early in the morning. So we asked people, how do you survive these summer months? How do you beat the heat and stay cool?
CARA DE OCAMPO, homemaker: I’m able to beat the heat by drinking lots of water and healthy fruit shakes. I also altered my workout from hot yoga to just regular Vinyasa yoga so I don’t overheat. On weekends, I go to Tagaytay with my husband where the breeze is nice and cool.
TON CONCEPCION, president, Condura: I beat the heat by making cool Condura refrigerators! Seriously though, the best way to beat the heat is to embrace it! So I stay cool by diving and going to the beach for some serious relaxation and bonding with close friends and family.
LUCIANO COSTA, actor/model: Summer heat is inevitable. So, if you can’t beat it, join it! Basking under the sun and getting a nice summer tan is the perfect thing to do.
CESCA LITTON, host: Head for water or high land. If all else fails, it’s mind over matter. You can always imagine yourself in the North Pole playing with a polar bear or a walrus.
BENG DEE, homemaker: We try to plan a trip out of the country during summer, which allows us to escape the high temperature of Manila. This is our annual bonding with the children, but when here, I just do the usual — stay indoors and turn on the AC, take a lot of cold drinks to regenerate my energy, put on sunscreen, wear light, comfy clothes, and if I need to plan any activity, I do it after sunset. But most of all, I try to beat the heat with a cool head and a matching attitude.
PALOMA ESMERIA, model: I try to load up on tropical fruits to boost my energy and hit the beach as much as I can. But at the same time, I take extra precaution for my skin and hair by using sunblock, hair restoration treatments, and drinking lots of water.
SARI YAP, president and CEO, Mega Publishing Group: I can take heat better than cold weather so summer does not bother me. I change my wardrobe to light cotton dresses in white, pastels and brights so I feel cooler. I also now use the air-conditioner at night, which I don’t normally do during the rest of the year since my bedroom always enjoys a cool breeze.
CARLA ABELLANA, actress: To beat the summer heat, I head off to the mall, to Tagaytay, or to the movies to cool down and relax with my family and friends.
MYRZA SISON, editorial director, Summit Media, editor in chief, Spot.H: Strapless tops and dresses, icy cold watermelon-green mango smoothies, and a cool, calm attitude when things heat up!
MACKY ESCALONA, athlete: The summer heat gives me energy to work harder, gain more knowledge and forge lasting relationships. Summer is the best time to go back to one’s roots — in my case, the beautiful province of Tarlac, while eating classic Pinoy halo-halo.
LUIS ALANDY, actor: When not busy with work, I make sure I set aside a weekend or more to enjoy the cool waters of Boracay or Puerto Galera. Otherwise, when I’m just in Manila, I don’t really go out that much when the sun’s out.
JOHN A. TANJANGCO, director of sales and marketing, Bellarocca Resort and Spa: Water! Water! Water! Drink it. Swim in it. Dive into it! It’s the best way to beat the sweltering summer heat. Whether coming out of the gym, or just being parched from the scorching heat, water is your best friend during these moments of thirst. Looking to lower your body temperature? Take a plunge in a pool and close those pores. And if budget permits, travel to any of the resorts in our 7,107 islands and cool yourself in the beaches of Boracay, Palawan, Cebu and Marinduque.
