Which do you want to read first, the good news or the bad news? Let’s start with the positive: 2009 is still a good year for the Philippines, according to feng shui master Joseph Chau; the bad news is that this is the last year in the “good” cycle that started for the country in 2004.
“Filipinos should not, and have no reason to be, so negative this year,” he says.
What about next year, 2010, is there going to be years of bad cycle? At the press conference in Mandarin Oriental, which goes all out in celebrating the Lunar New Year in Manila, geomancer Chau laughs and dodges the question: “I will answer that next year.”
Chau says the six-year good cycle is due to the Philippines being a hot-season country and the years since 2004 have been metal, water and earth, which means they “cool down the hot weather.”
What’s hot this year (in a good way) is banking. Yes, following the devastating global economic crisis last year, 2009 is actually a good year for the banking industry. But he says it’s not a good year for the US, given the dollar fluctuation, so if you’re considering going abroad to work, look closer to home — Southeast Asian countries will do better than the rest of the world.
In this Year of the Earth Ox, the luckiest industries apart from banking are car, sales, entertainment, tourism, hotel, trading, transportation, call center, gas, etc. In the second position are construction, real estate, garment, textile, health food, agriculture and education.
From Malacañang To Marriages
What about Malacañang Palace? The underlying question, of course, is this: Is President Gloria Arroyo going to have a good one or — like most of the years in her term — a bad one?
Chau is quick to say he has never met the lady president, but yes, he has been to Malacañang. He would only go as far as saying, “There will be a lot of challenges Malacañang will face this year.”
“The main office building in Malacañang Palace in the Philippines is located in a good location based on the feng shui magic square. So, the Philippine government should do something to attract more investors to come so that the country will bloom. As I mentioned every year, tourism is one of the big sources of money for the country and this country has a lot of potential natural resources to develop. So, I hope the Tourism Department plans accordingly for it. It is sure to bring abundant income to the country.”
With the wedding star in the center of the magic square this year, better start fitting on white dresses. It’s a lucky year to get married because the Year of the Ox is a year of Double Spring (one in 2009, and another one in 2010, still within the lunar year of the ox).
Beware of the conflict star, however. Located in the northeast direction, this star signifies gossip, envy, criticism, fighting and court cases, affecting particularly young people. “They should be more humble and patient to avoid conflicts,” Chau advises. “They should be more open to communication to avoid misunderstandings. They should exercise self-control and discipline and try to avoid drinking too much and indulging in too much nightlife.”
In short: Better be home early than be caught in a late-night-party scuffle.
The disaster star, located in the north, points to accidents in dangerous water activities. “This is also related to flooding, seafood, shipping and water transport, so people should be alert to proper hygiene to avoid seafood poisoning. Proper attention should be given to boats and cruise ships to ensure they are not overloaded.”
Obama And The White House
Naturally, we had to ask about US President Barack Obama. Chau says he had told people that Obama would win even when he was still fighting for the Democratic nomination against Senator Hillary Clinton.
He says, “Obama should pay particular attention to his physical safety. He will face a lot of challenges and opposition. If he consults a qualified feng shui expert Obama can change his luck.”
What about Filipino overseas workers in the US? “The financial situation will not recover until after three years, which means OFWs might be laid off or their contracts terminated. If they want to look for overseas work, they should look at Southeast Asian and Middle East countries.”
So how does Joseph Chau — born in a Tiger year — celebrate Chinese New Year? First of all, he clears out the clutter in his house and throws out old furniture to bring good chi in, then he puts fresh flowers for the space to look and smell good, then he dresses himself in everything new, from underpants to shirt to shoes. Then of course he eats lucky foods (he leads the celebrations at Mandarin Oriental Manila).
“The most important thing is I pray to my God,” he says. Whatever your religion, you should take time to prepare your spiritual life and pray to your God. He will listen, 100 percent. One thing is important: don’t be too greedy in asking so many things from your God. If you want and want, you won’t be happy. Thanksgiving is very important, you have to appreciate what God has given you.”
