White riot
Joe Strummer of The Clash once sang about his desire for a “white riot.” Billy Idol crooned in his pseudo-Jim Morrison baritone about a “white wedding.” The Moody Blues had a thing or two about “nights in white satin.” And white is Jack White’s other favorite color. Rock music and white make a heady mix. The same with Swatch.
Swatch explores the cleanest of colors in its latest collection — from the charming to the provocative to the glamorous glamice. Swatch also gives in to its fixation with all things Bond — villains included — with Blofeld’s Cat (from You Only Live Twice) and Wint & Kidd (Diamonds are Forever) watches.
Here are the timepieces featured in Swatch’s white collection — clean as a whistle and ready to shine.
Star Sign
It was a dark and snowy night... The broad white patent leather strap of this impressively elegant Swatch Irony Nabab lays down a shining pathway to stylishly asymmetrical stainless steel end-pieces holding the massive polished stainless steel case. The polished stainless steel bezel features engraved hammered-silver hour markers that point to the textured silver dial, where an abstract intersection forms the centre of a structured, polished and embossed opaque silver star. Tapered two-tone polished and matt silver hour and minute hands and a slime white seconds hand mark the time.
Winter Frost
The silver glow of a winter’s day lights up the heart of A Romantic Season. The snow-white silicon strap of this enchanting Swatch Gent evokes wintry landscapes glistening in the light of distant stars. On the 6 o’clock side of the strap is a shining five-point star made of polished stainless steel and set with 20 sparkling white crystals. The star is fastened with a fixed metal loop that slides along the strap.
Wint & Kidd — Diamonds Are Forever
In Diamonds Are Forever, black-hearted Blofeld henchmen Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd attempt to assassinate James Bond with a bomb disguised as dessert. The alligator-pattern white leather strap has a black leather loop with a white 007 pistol logo and a stainless steel clasp; the strap forms an elegant counterpoint to the stainless steel bezel mounted on this classy Swatch Irony Medium’s polished stainless steel case. The bezel is set with 44 transparent white crystals that form a sparkling frame around the sunbrushed silver dial, which features a delicate white vortex pattern at its centre.
Flying Provocacy
For days when only white seems right and nothing else will do. The broad white silicon strap of this stylish, lightweight and robust Swatch Chrono Plastic has a dark blue plastic clasp for contrast and features concentric-circle patterning framing the moulded white plastic case. The plastic crown is white and the chrono-function pushers are in green and dark blue plastic.
White Feelings
A luminous, pearly white light glows in a wintry sky. The plastic strap of this lustrous Swatch Jelly in Jelly has a metallised surface printed with an abstract floral design and set with sparkling transparent white crystals of varying sizes.
Steel & Charm
A crystalline classic for the lady in white. The white alligator pattern leather strap of this coolly elegant Swatch Irony Chrono features stylish stainless steel end-pieces set with sparkling translucent white crystals. Mounted on the stainless steel case is a polished steel bezel with brushed steel hour markers, each set with two white crystals. Fine silver indices mark the hours on the broad white outer ring of the silver dial whose patterned silver centre alternates brushed and shining rays beneath the chrono and small seconds counters.
Glamice
A shimmering pearl and crystal vision delights the dreamer’s eye. The bracelet of this glowing original Swatch Lady features stainless steel links framing two rows of shimmering pearls hung with delicate stainless steel star-charms.
Blofeld’s Cat — You Only Live Twice
Popular still among Bond film fans are Blofeld and his fluffy white cat, to which Swatch pays tribute with this classic Swatch Gent. The white synthetic leather strap evokes the cat and her master’s affiliation with the enemy organisation known as “SPECTRE”, represented by the ominous octopus with 8 spiky tentacles. This menacing beast appears engraved on a shining stainless steel charm dangling, like an ID tag on a collar, from the single stainless steel end piece that joins the six-o’clock side of the strap to the clear plastic case. The 007 pistol logo is displayed in silver on the white synthetic leather loop.
