Smart 3G is changing the way we live and work

-
If you can’t go to the beach, then let the beach come to you.

To demonstrate the capabilities of 3G technology, Smart did exactly just that. With a live video feed from Boracay projected on a wide screen, Smart transformed The Loft in Rockwell into a beach in the middle of Makati City.

The leading wireless services provider recently held a media event to showcase Smart 3G’s exciting services which include video calling, video streaming and high speed Internet.

Boracay-based Buganda tribe fire dancers and percussionists provided the entertainment. Henna tattoo artists and face painters were also on hand to provide free body art.

Colorful beach bags and Boracay passes that later served as raffle tickets were given to guests. Eight lucky members of the press went home with brand new 3G phones. These included Sony Ericsson K608i phones, and Nokia N70 and N90 units. A trip for two to Boracay was also raffled off.

Addict Mobile endorser Tim Yap described how Smart 3G services have affected his lifestyle. Through Smart 3G, he can do videoconferencing with his colleagues, watch movie trailers on his mobile before boarding a plane, and even enjoy Sugod music video of Sandwich through video streaming.

"3G is technology but it is also an experience," says Mon Isberto, head of Smart’s public affairs division. Smart presented "only the first batch of services we’re offering you. As the technology grows, people will find uses that are hard to predict," he adds. Smart 3G was launched last February 14, way ahead of other telco firms. Smart unveiled rates for the service last May 1.

Surrounded by palm branches, tropical flowers, beach-finds, fresh coconuts and bright summer colors, the members of the press experienced Smart 3G services firsthand. They went through several Smart 3G stations: video calling, high-speed Internet, live TV, music videos and full music track downloads, movie trailers and video clips, live cams, and real HSDPA.

Carrying their Boracay passes and sipping fresh fruit shakes, they watched GMA 7 and ABS-CBN programs on Smart 3G Live TV. They experienced face-to-face phone calls through video calling, some even to Smart’s foreign partners through the Smart 3G International Video Calling feature. They checked their Yahoo! e-mails and accessed Google through the high-speed Internet service. Music lovers were treated to music videos and full music track downloads that allow users to enjoy their cell phones like an iPod. They also viewed movie trailers and video clips. Meanwhile, live cams showed them the real-time traffic situation in major roads like EDSA McKinley and C-5, as well as views of great summer destinations like Subic and Anilao.

"We have the widest coverage and the most affordable 3G services," says Dan Ibarra, head of Smart’s usage and services marketing group. For example, Smart 3G offers high-speed Internet access at only P10 per 30 minutes, regardless of file size downloaded.

Real HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) was also explained and demonstrated to those who attended. Described as "super 3G", it allows for data calls with amazingly fast transfer rates (up to 1.8 megabits per second). Soon to be offered with PLDT WeRoam, users will eventually enjoy better quality video streaming, and enhanced user experience in web browsing and file downloads with HSDPA. Smart has the largest HSDPA-enabled network in the country.

On top of these, the members of the press were given a sneak preview of the newest Smart 3G services – Voice Text and Mobile Karaoke.

Indeed, as Isberto says, 3G is going to change the way people live and work!
