What love songs are most meaningful to you?
February 13, 2005 | 12:00am
Almost all of the songs I can think of are about love finding it, losing it, celebrating it. Our country most especially has a lot of kundiman songs that have stood the test of time and even to this day are among the favorites during weddings. Ironically, though we seem to claim to be the happiest people on earth, we seem to have a penchant for songs about heartache.
We asked personalities what their most memorable songs are and what makes them meaningful.

SUKI SALVADOR, managing editor, Icon magazine: Janet Jacksons Anytime, Anyplace. Its sensual beats and apathetic lyrics make for the perfect love groove.
OGIE ALCASID, singer, TV host: Theres one song by American Pop idol Reuben Studdard that I really love. It reminds me of the exact feeling when one is in love. Its called Flying Without Wings.
LAINE L. SANTANA, assistant vice president for public affairs, HSBC: Music figures big time in my lifes milestones and love songs top my list be it the nostalgic Ill Be Seeing You or Kevyn Lettaus jazzy Sunlight. Honestly romantic are Of All the Things and Maroon 5s cool and modern Sunday Morning. Though particularly not my favorite, La Vie en Rose will always be meaningful because it was the tune that helped me calm my nerves while giving birth to my son six years ago. It sure took my mind off the Epidural. But the song is still in my head.
JENNY PENA, director for public relations, Inter-Continental Hotel Manila: Despite my "citizen of the world" cachet, Im basically a simple and romantic person at heart. I do go for love songs and poetry. The melody, lyrics and artists interpretation make the following love songs my favorite: Taking a Chance at Love and A Love That Will Last sung by Renee Olstead, Michael Balls version of You Had Me At Hello, Natalie Coles interpretation of Cole Porters Everytime We Say Goodbye, Michel Legrands I Will Wait For You sung to a bossa nova beat by Lisa Ono, Cole Porters So In Love as sung by Lara Fabian and Mario Frangoulis, Angela Bofills Tonight I Give In, Andrew Lloyd Webbers All I Ask of You from The Phantom of the Opera and Henry Mancinis Two for the Road.
Representative MILES ROCES, 3rd district of Manila: You Do Something to Me by Sinead OConnor was the song that I always listened to when I just got to know Maile, my wife. The song describes exactly how I felt about her Maile mystified and hypnotized me in a way that nobody else did. Now its Just To See Her by Smokey Robinson, after seven years of being steady, and after seven years of being married this song still describes how I feel about Maile now. I just want to see her all the time; when I leave in the morning, after a while I would call her to ask where she is so I could have lunch with her when Im in session in Congress.
SANDRA ESTRELLA, homemaker: The most memorable song for me would be All My Life by America. Its lyrics are strikingly simple but the heart of their meaning is truly profound, making it conducive for an utterly romantic setting.
ODETTE PUMAREN, homemaker: I Finally Found Someone by Barbra Streisand and Bryan Adams. I guess the title speaks for itself because I finally found someone who brings out the best in me and vice versa.
SAMANTHA, singer: Love songs for God, my parents, husband, children and other loved ones are very meaningful to me because they express the very reason for my existence. It makes me look at life in a different light and with so much hope, in spite of all the trials and negativity in this world.
Songs I like are With All I Am and Jesus, Love of My Soul (for God), When I Fall In Love (for my husband), You are the Love of God (for my parents), If I Could (for my children), Youve Got A Friend (for my friends and love ones.)
DENISE WELDON, photographer, with daughter Carolina: Im a romantic and have a preference for classical love songs that have a way of love like Fly Me To The Moon, When I Fall In Love, The Nearness Of You, Watch What Happens, Unforgettable and on and on
TINTIN BERSOLA-BABAO: TV personality: The Way You Look At Me Tonight is the song that holds very special meaning for me and Julius. He made me listen to it when he was courting me. I was unsuspicious that it was his way of asking for a sign if I was the right one. He asked me to dance with him and we both ended up crying on each others shoulder. Michael Bublé and Sharon Cuneta both sang it as a duet when Julius proposed marriage in Sharons show. During our wedding, Eddie Mercado sang it the Frank Sinatra way. Romantic! When we are home, Julius plays the song and we dance to it pa rin.
