Scent and reminiscence

I love fragrances. Who doesnt, anyway? Fragrances have a lot of history behind them. Theres something supernatural about waters, elixirs, and vinegars from hundreds of years ago that had miraculous benefits for people. Not only do colognes and perfumes make us smell nice, they also have this distinct quality that brings back memories from the past. They evoke different things for different people. I grew up smelling different scents from my grandmothers French perfumes, dads musky aftershave to my sisters mild baby colognes. Whenever I get a whiff of a familiar scent, it makes me so nostalgic about a particular event of my life.
The first time John Marangos, marketing and training director of Thierry Mugler Parfums-Asia-Pacific, made me smell Mugler Cologne at a press event, it brought back old memories of being bathed as a child, vacationing in an exotic place, as well as the smell of newly laundered linen. The refreshing citrus scent was so addictive that I wanted to splash the bottles entire contents all over my body.
Thierry Mugler, creator of Angel and Amen perfume, was inspired to make Mugler Cologne from a soap he smelled on his Morocco trip as a kid.
"The ancient and mythical tales surrounding colognes have always fascinated Mr. Mugler," Marangos said. "He was intrigued about the idea of something that was clean smelling, something that would evoke the smell of your own skin yet at the same time maintain its sensuality, as well as give longevity to the fragrance."
Mugler Cologne draws on the tradition of early colognes and is reinterpreted to suit a modern context; its citrus sensual scent is exhilarating and gentle, which does not overpower ones skin. As we all know, fragrance reacts to the skin depending on the skin type, age and diet, which affect the longevity of the product.
Mugler Cologne contains white musk that allows the fragrance to last on the skin for six to eight hours. With the tropical climate here in Manila, this product will keep the skin fresh for a very long time. Isnt this what we have all been looking for?
It was not only the scent that attracted me to Mugler Cologne. The refillable bottles, with their simple and restrained design, come in three sizes: 75 ml, 125 ml and 300 ml. Marangos explained, "When we came up with the 300ml, the whole idea was generosity of application something you can really luxuriate on as much as you want to. When you experience the scent itself, it is really something you cant stop smelling." I kept sniffing my hands when I first applied the scent on my skin. Addictive does not even begin to describe it.
There is a sense of vitality and energy from this green cologne that just draws you in. Hey, those transparent bottles come with a splash and spray nozzle. According to Marangos, "The reason why we maintained the splash-and-spray nozzle was to pay homage to the way in which it was applied originally. (The splash nozzle) revives the rubbing gesture."
This is a welcome dilemma for girls with hurly-burly schedules: To splash or to spray.
But the one thing truly unforgettable about Mugler Cologne is definitely the scent: It is comfortable, extremely versatile, clean, sexy and very unique. And it has no gender-bias.
Marangos noted, "It is a universal scent for both men and women to enjoy. It is not targeted for a specific gender or age group, but rather for people who really want to enjoy something that will bring them a sense of vitality, some sense of freshness."
The fragrance line extends to a bath and body line, which includes body lotion, shower gel and deodorant stick. The body lotion has a milky texture that is easily absorbed by the skin, leaving no annoying residue. It makes your skin so smooth and fresh-smelling.
"When you experience the Mugler universe, you really are purchasing something that the creator, Mr. Mugler himself, has been involved in from the beginning to the completion of the product. You will find a product with a lot of detail, product thats really thought about in all its intricacies," Marangos concluded.
In creating fragrances, simplicity is the hardest thing to achieve. Not for Thierry Mugler.
