BOOKS FOR FILIPINAS THE READING CLUB

- Girlie Rodis -
The movie Filipinas deals with the trials and travails of a middle-class family, in this case the Filipinas widow and her six children, each with a different personality and temperament.

It was the only movie I was able to preview before leaving for the US for work and family obligations. Director Joel Lamangan and Viva Films invited a select few to preview the movie at the very exclusive My Cinema at the Greenbelt 3 movie theater row.

As I come from a family of eight siblings, I could genuinely relate to the interaction that went on although we do not have as many cinematic and heated arguments in our family.

While at the preview, I took time to ask two of the stars and their director to share their favorite books with the Reading Club.

JOEL LAMANGAN,
director – PHILIPPINE PAST REVISITED by RENATO CONSTANTINO. It made me see and understand Philippine history from a Filipino perspective. It is one of my earliest readings. It shaped the foundation of my socio-political beliefs.

ARMIDA SIGUION REYNA,
who plays the matriarch of the Filipinas family – REVOLT OF THE MASSES by TEODORO AGONCILLO. It is interesting to note that what happened in the past is happening again, the same political warfare goes on. We have no sense of heritage and no love of country.

MARICEL SORIANO,
who plays the eldest daughter and the film’s narrator – HARRY POTTER series by J.K. ROWLING. Harry Potter because its core is the universal message of love. Harry was made out of love and that is why he is protected from the forces of evil. Harry Potter brings me to a totally different world, it allows me to experience the world of fantasy and wizardry.

DAWN ZULUETA,
as the sibling working as a caregiver in Israel – THE FINAL QUEST by RICK JOYNER. One of my favorite books. Joyner shares his spirit inspired visions of what believers are up against in the spiritual battle with evil. Since reading it, I have a deeper understanding of the human difficulties and that we have been fully equipped by our faith in Jesus to overcome.

AIKO MELENDEZ,
as the youngest sister in charge of the family business of the Filipinas family – 48 LAWS OF POWER. As a Quezon City councilor, I deal with all sorts of situations and this book has helped me a lot.

VICTOR NERI,
a labor leader and the younger brother at odds with his elder brother, played by Richard Gomez – BIOGRAPHY OF KRUSCHEV, BIOGRAPHY OF THE KENNEDYS, BIOGRAPHY OF HITLER. I am interested in all historical books. They give me an understanding of what transpired in those eras. Hitler was an evil but brilliant man. The charisma and power and tragedy of the Kennedys make for fascinating reading. The biography of Kruschev gives insight on the cold war.

The Reading Club recommends SEEDS OF TERROR by Maria Ressa available in all Powerbooks and National Book Stores branches. We should all try to understand terrorism as it has begun to be part of all our lives.
