What Dreamgirls read
March 2, 2003 | 12:00am
You are sure to fall under their spell. On March14, Atlantis Productions brings you Dreamgirls, the Broadway musical event for 2003.
Dreamgirls, the winner of six Tony Awards, with music by Henry Krieger and book and lyrics by Tim Eyen, conquered Broadway in the 80s and spawned many hit songs including I Am Changing, We are a Family, And I Am Telling You and Hard to Say Goodbye. Dreamgirls tells the inspiring story of three female singers trying to make their dreams come true as the musical landscape changes from rhythm and blues to disco. It is loosely based on the lives of The Supremes. It sold out on Broadway last year and plans are underway for a revival in New York.
Heading the cast as the dueling divas Effie Melody White and Deena Jones are two of the Philippines most in-demand young singers, Bituin Escalante and Anna Fegi. Both performers were recently seen in Atlantis Productions runaway hit The Rocky Horror Show. Also joining the all-star cast are Lana Jalosjos (who performed in Rent and Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Tex Ordoñez, Calvin Millado, Raul Montessa, Jett Pangan and Nyoy Volante (who alternates with Jett Pangan at certain performances).
Dreamgirls is directed by Bobby Garcia, with musical direction by Gerard Salonga, choreography by Andy Alviz, costume design by Rajo Laurel, additional costumes by Sky Manapat and lighting design by Gerry Fernandez. Dreamgirls runs from March 14 to April 6 at Onstage at Greenbelt, Makati.
For tickets call Atlantis Productions at 892-7078 or Ticketworld at 891-5610.

1. The Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling
2. Various scripts of films and plays
When I get started on a Harry Potter book I cant put it down. Lately I have been reading lots of scripts of films and plays and I enjoy reading them and paying close attention to their dramatic structure.
The Reading Club recommends The Threatening Storm, a book that tries to explain why George Bush stands firm on his belief it is in the worlds best interest to attack Iraq. I still dont believe in any kind of war but I wanted to understand more than what I am reading about in the broadsheets and watching on the news. Available in National Book Store as well as Powerbooks.
The Reading Club enjoyed OPRAH and the article written by Kim Cattral on why she decided not to have kids. Available from Emerald Headway.
