Win big prizes for writing about your favorite book
November 10, 2002 | 12:00am
Whats the one book that moved you, made you cry, made you laugh, changed your life, kept you awake till morning? The Philippine STAR and National Book Store want to find out.
"We want to encourage Filipinos of all ages to pick up a book today and rediscover their love for reading," says NBS general manager Socorro Ramos.
"The STAR is a consistent supporter of reading campaigns by the government and private sector," says STAR president and CEO Miguel G. Belmonte. "And were always on the lookout for promising writers because we believe in the power of the printed word and that reading empowers people with knowledge."
So let the bookworm in you run free. Join My Favorite Book contest sponsored by The Philippine STAR and National Book Store. The STAR Lifestyle Section is accepting unpublished essays on your favorite book any kind of book, whether an old favorite or a new discovery. Tell us why you love it, how it enriched your life or moved you and tell us too the things you dont like about it. Dont just give us the summary, please.
Include your name, age, address, telephone number, and school or office of employment if any in your entry and on the envelope. Also send and a picture of yourself not smaller than a passport-size photo. Entries that fail to meet these requirements will automatically be disqualified.
Though Shakespeare wrote his stories with a quill, we prefer the modern way: typewritten, double spaced, on plain letter-sized paper (fragrant or colored stationery gives the editors allergies). Entries should not be more than four pages long (5,000 characters or 1,000 words).
Winners can only win once for the weekly contest. Any succeeding entries of a previous winner will no longer be considered. Weekly winners will receive P3,000 worth of gift certificates from National Book Store and their entries will be published in the Sunday Life section.
At the end of the contest in December, three winners will be chosen by a panel of judges composed of The Philippine STAR editors/columnists and renowned Filipino writers. All prizes will be 50 percent in cash and 50 percent in gift certificates P50,000 for the first-prize winner, P30,000 for second, and P20,000 for third.
All entries will be the property of National Book Store, which reserves the right to publish the essays. Employees of NBS, STAR and their advertising and PR agencies are disqualified from joining the contest.
Winners will be contacted by National Book Store.
