Delores Custer holds food styling seminar
MANILA, Philippines - On Friday, Nov. 19, master food stylist Delores Custer will give a seminar based on her book Food Styling: The Art of Preparing Food for the Camera, recently published in the US by John Wiley & Sons. With a master’s degree in food and nutrition from New York University, Custer has a long list of clients that includes the who’s who in the food industry such as Kraft Foods, General Mills, Campbell Soup, Unilever, Nestle, Red Lobster, Budweiser, Newman’s Own, ConAgra, McDonalds, and Cuisinart. Custer will discuss important topics in the book such choosing props for food styling, color harmony, getting the right look, and the gold standard in food styling. She will also demonstrate some basic food styling techniques and show a video on the making of a food commercial from start to finish. Contrary to misconceptions, Custer says, food stylists use real, not fake, food. Other topics include principles of recipe and cookbook writing and overcoming challenges on the set.
Food manufacturers, distributors and exporters as well as caterers and restaurateurs will have a decided advantage if they know what food styling is all about. The knowledge can help them sell their products better in a market that is very competitive. Photographers, art directors, culinary students and instructors, food writers and bloggers should also know about food styling.
