MANILA, Philippines — Did you know that 4 out of 5 dogs at the age of three years old already experience gum diseases, which can lead to more serious health problems?

And sadly, 90% of fur parents are not at all aware that dogs have oral care needs that should be addressed properly, too.

Dr. Saza Curaming, veterinary physician and scientific communication manager of Pedigree Dentastix, stressed the importance of paying attention to your dog’s oral care at a recent Zoom press con.

“Dogs are five times more at risk or prone to have dental problems than humans. Four out of five dogs at the age of three years old already experience gum disease. These dental problems are often overlooked, and often can lead to significant health problems,” the vet warned.

She noted that gum diseases often start with tartar, and can cause inflammations of the gums. Dogs can be in pain and of course cannot communicate their pain to their fur parents. The inflammation of the gums of the dogs are often linked to kidney issues, and other serious health problems like bacteria in the heart and lungs, that can create more problems. She also said that studies show that poor gum health of dogs can be common among those dogs that experience severe cardiac diseases.

Dogs with gum problems are usually irritable, cannot eat well, can get aggressive and experience halitosis and bleeding of the mouth.

The vet shared some of the oral care tips you can start doing to manage the dental health of your dogs:

1. Establish a regular oral care routine for your dogs.

“You should always provide an oral care routine, like toothbrushing, combined with at least one Pedigree Dentastix with size suitable for your pet. They have sizes for puppies, medium and large sized dog. Establishing a schedule for your dog’s oral care routine is important. Some do it every night, some every morning.”

2. It’s never too late to start an oral care session for your pet.

“Even if your dogs are old, you can start an oral care routine to take care of their teeth and gums.”

Dental health care greatly impacts your dog’s overall health.

3. Make sure to do an oral examination by a vet at least once a year.

Professional vet care is still the best way to monitor your dog’s oral health.

4. Buy chews and toys that are vet-approved.

“When buying toys and chews for your dogs, make sure they are safe, and ideally recommended by the vet.”

5. Invest in convenient dental care products for your dogs.

One Pedigree Denstix a day for your dog can help reduce the formation of tartar, as it addresses bacteria in your dog’s teeth and gums.

“One entire whole stick is scientifically tested to address the oral health care of your dog daily," said the veterinarian.

Actress and beauty queen Megan Young shared how the product has helped her take good care of the dental health of her cute dog, Soba.

“Si Mikael talaga ang may gusto na magka-dog kami. At first, I said we won't be responsible enough. But she is adorable and perfect for our family. Soba is a great and wonderful emotional support for our family. When I'm feeling down, she is just there. Her energy gives me so much life. For us couple na mahilig mag-travel, the convenience brought by Pedigree Dentastix helps us make sure that we can look after Soba’s teeth and gums and health with ease.”
