‘Animal Atlas 2’ on Discovery Kids

MANILA, Philippines -Always wanted to get up close and personal with your favorite animals but realize they’re scattered all over the globe?

Animal Atlas 2 is the answer! This fun and informative series introduces young viewers to every kind of animal imaginable, from the familiar to the astounding, including apes and giant lizards, sharks and tigers, and all other animals from the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australia, and everywhere in between. Learn about their lives, their history, and the adaptations that allow them to survive and thrive.

But the best part of all is that viewers get to meet these beautiful creatures face to face all in the comfort of their living room! In each half-hour episode, viewers will discover all there is to know about the animal star of the day and learn a fact or two that will only build their knowledge and love for wildlife.

Animal Atlas 2 premieres daily at 2 p.m., starting Monday, Jan. 21. Encores on the same day at 8 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. and weekends at 3:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

1.     Manatees sleep underwater yet still rise to the surface every 20 minutes to breathe.

2.     Dolphin’s cone-shaped teeth number more than a hundred! And all these teeth are used for grasping their slippery prey, not for chewing.

3.     Although the lifespan of the crocodilian is usually about 30 to 60 years, some have been reported to live as long as 80 and even up to a century!

4.     The easiest way to tell the difference between an alligator and a crocodile is by looking at its teeth.  When the alligator closes its mouth, the teeth of the lower jaw are almost completely hidden. On the crocodile on the other hand, the teeth of the lower jaw can be seen even when the jaw is closed.

5.     Most felids, better known as members of the cat family, have tails that measure at least one third of to one half of the head and body length of the animal.

6.     Cows aren’t the only animals with four stomachs. Sheep, goats and giraffes are also part of the ruminant species all which have a four-chambered stomach to help them digest their food.

7.     The hippopotamus, the third largest land animal is found only in Africa and was named by the Ancient Greeks – Hippos, meaning horse, and potomus, meaning river.

8.     Don’t mistake a lion’s lazy yawn for laziness. Yawning accelerates the flow of blood through the lion’s body, toning up its muscles and making an instant supply of energy available!

9.     Did you know sharks have to keep swimming to stay alive? Unlike other fish that have swim bladders, which keep them buoyant, if a shark stops swimming, it will sink.

10.    Under a panda’s white fur is pink skin and under their black fur their skin is black!
