MANILA, Philippines - Running is twice the fun when you go the extra mile with your dog. It does wonders for your health, keeps you fit, and gives you time to bond with your pet. It’s also part of being a responsible dog owner to make sure that your pets get the right amount of exercise they need to stay fit and healthy.
Pet Express shares tips on how you can get your pets running on the right paws.
• Run safely and conveniently. Train your dog to run beside you instead of pulling you. Go for hands-free leashes and harnesses that will suit your running style. The ideal leash distance is within three feet.
• Go for grooming. Dogs can’t run properly if they have to keep scratching pesky fleas away. Keep them clean and pest-free with anti-flea sprays and medications. Trimming their toenails will prevent them from snagging on sidewalk cracks and tree branches.
• If you are thinking of joining fun runs and other competitions, it is best to consult with your vet if your dog is physically fit to run.
• Keep your dog in top shape with a high-nutrition diet, as well as vitamin supplements.
• Never let your dog run on a full stomach. A few small treats before and after a run are ideal.
• Keep tabs on your pooch. An ID tag will minimize the chances of losing him.
• Bring small toys like a ball to coax your dog into running faster. Reward your dog for good behavior with some treats to let him know he’s doing great.
• Don’t force your dog to cover more miles than he is used to. If you can hear him panting heavily, or see his ears flattened, his tail down and hind legs dragging, it’s a sign he is exhausted and it’s time to give him a break.
• After a long run, you dog needs to re-hydrate! Give him a good bath to keep him smelling fresh and clean.
