Pet Life

Of cats and birds

DOG DAZE - Kathy Moran -

Here’s a little update on the two kittens (Jack and Poy), who share a home with five dogs and Pepsi, the other cat princess.

Speaking of cats, I now understand why cat lovers say that eventually the pet cat becomes the master (or in this case, mistress) of the home.

Well, since we got Pepsi, she is now called Princess Pepsi by all who meet   her. After all, she does have that regal bearing that only a princess cat has.

The doggies, they have come to accept her presence in the house, although we still have yet to let them play together (afraid).

Jack and Poy were treated by Doc Wil Almoro of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). We tried to treat their galis (mange) at home using virgin coconut oil (VCO), the same treatment I use for my psoriasis.

Angry birds: It’s just a game but it’s loads of fun

Although the VCO seemed to be working, it was not working fast enough. Jack and Poy spent two nights at the PAWS shelter where they got deworming shots and treatment for their mange.

Because of their condition they can’t stay with Pepsi yet because mange is contagious. So, we have cleaned up their little home in our garden and they will stay there until their mange clears up. I was assured by PAWS director Anna Cabrera that I should see improvement in the next two weeks.

I am also happy that they have been dewormed as this is an assurance that they will start growing faster — they are so scrawny.

Jack and Poy are really two sweet kittens who love hanging out with people. They also really love playing with Pepsi, but that will have to wait a little longer.

If there is one thing that I have learned about opening one’s heart and home to abandoned animals it’s that the abandoned animals accept whatever it is we have to offer and they love us for it.

What better way of living life can there be than that.

My barkybunch Tasha, Nik, Gorby, Yuri and Cola send loving barks to my mom who celebrates her birthday today. Pepsi, Jack and Poy purr happy birthday and lots of blessings to my mom, too.

I have gotten into the habit of playing Angry Birds on my celphone.

If you have never played this game let me give you a crash course. It is simply firing the birds from a slingshot and trying to pop the pigs that are hiding in the many obstacles in the way.

I guess it’s my way of dealing with pent-up stress. I like the game because there are several kinds of birds and each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. The purpose of the game is simple and straightforward — get rid of the pigs by firing the least number of birds.

At least I know that the birds in Angry Birds, although they may be angry, are free to fly in the many hues of the skies that the game has.
