Top mistakes pet parents make

MANILA, Philippines - Caring for pets with the same meticulous attention you give to a baby is the focus of the recent issue of Bow & Wow Times, the newsletter/digest featuring many helpful natural pet care tips and narratives from pet parents.

Gracing the cover of Bow & Wow Times (available at Bow & Wow branches at the fifth floor of Shangri-La Plaza Mall, Mandaluyong City; and at the lower ground floor of Greenbelt 5, Makati City), is a cute and fluffy Maltese named Silvano, who is the grand prize winner of Bow & Wow’s Petparazzi Facebook photo upload contest for dogs and cats. Also featured in the inside pages are the other winners, plus other pet photos sent by pet parents, which have won for their pets special treats from Bow & Wow.

Bow & Wow Times has added interesting new sections, including “Canine Conversations” and “Vetspeak.” If you have experienced horror moments of seeing your own pet handled in an uncaring manner by trainers, you are not alone. Canine behavioral trainer Elsie Araneta shares her own bad experiences with dog trainers who adopted punishment-based techniques and created fear and distrust in their pets. Read the article “Cross Over: Adding Fun and Kindness to Canine Training” to glean useful learnings, and how teaching your canine pals good manners and behavior can be done using a reward-based method that creates confident dogs and harmonious home life. In “Vetspeak,” a veterinarian shares ways to help pets recover fast when they have fallen ill, and to give preventive care like canine shots to protect them from serious illnesses and complications.

Prevent flea and tick problems from happening with preventive steps that include ensuring they have good hygiene and healthy immune system. Read “Make Fleas Flee!” in the Pet Care section and read about dietary, grooming, and bathing tips, plus effective natural options to keep pesky fleas and ticks away. Glean pointers as well, particularly on how to boost your pet’s immune system and get rid of the undesirable smell on your dog’s coat, from Bow & Wow’s resident veterinarian in the Ask the Vet section.

Socialization is critical to having a well-adjusted dog. Read about “Tips on How to Make your Dog Stop Humping & Mounting” in the Petiquette section and learn to re-focus your pup’s attention and stop the unsightly behavior that can be annoying, especially if you have guests at home.

So as not to be taken aback that your pet has suddenly been afflicted with a serious condition, know the telltale signs of some canine illnesses. Read “Symptoms You Should Never Ignore in Your Baby” in the Pet Health section. The article outlines several warning signs of potential health problems that may eventually badly affect your furry home companions.
