Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's return to power sparks memes
MANILA, Philippines — Netizens flooded different social media sites with reactions after former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo became the first woman speaker of the House of Representatives.
With Gloria's return to power comes the comeback of memes.
Among the most popular ones is a netizen's video of Arroyo in the rostrum shouting “Dao Ming Si, naririnig mo ba ‘ko, ako to si Shan Cai,” inspired by a scene on the popular television series “Meteor Garden.”
In the video meme, lawyer Larry Gadon can be seen shouting back to Gloria with his character Dao Ming Si. The video footage was in the street, where Gadon had encounter protesters and was caught cursing them. The video now has over four million views as of this writing.
Another netizen likened Arroyo to “Harry Potter” character Dolores Umbridge.
“Dolores Umbridge is the antagonist everyone hates because she's the deadly one. A pretentious, manipulative, ambitious, biased and abusive official who will do anything, even the dirtiest way possible, to climb her way up to power. A proven corrupt yet still managed to maneuver back to a powerful position in the government,” the netizen wrote in the caption.
Meanwhile, another netizen posted on Twitter a picture of Arroyo side by side with Cersei Lannister, the evil queen in the hit HBO series “Game of Thrones."

Other memes include Arroyo shouting “What’s up Madlang People,” a la “It’s Showtime.” In another meme, she has been depicted as shouting that her neck brace and wheelchair will be given to former President Benigno Aquino III. Another meme shows a before and after photo that said, “5 years hindi napagaling ng doctor, 3-6 months napagaling ni Duterte.”
