Starting kids young at Bergdorf Goodman
NEW YORK — Kids who grow up in Manhattan are a precocious lot, wise and sophisticated beyond their years. That’s what happens when a child is brought up by worldly parents, in a place where a “Manhattan moment” happens to be a regular day in their lives.
Case in point: my friend’s son Tuscany is a born and bred New Yorker. He goes to school with Sarkozy’s kids. He summers in Biarritz. La Esquina is just a place to get burritos. Kelly Cutrone calls out to him when they run into each other in SoHo.
When it comes to style, they know their labels. While standing in line waiting for Marc Jacobs’ talk at The New York Times Center, kids no older than 14 were casually discussing how they shopped at Scoop and picked up something from MARC by Marc Jacobs at Bergdorf Goodman.
I wouldn’t be surprised if kids no older than six started speaking in the same fashion. Especially with the launch of Bergdorf Goodman’s newly designed children’s department aptly called, Little BG, which offers clothing and accessories for newborns to age six.
Set up to feel like a big, fancy playroom, in the middle of the space stands a “tree” that extends from floor to ceiling. White cabinetry trimmed in blue, filled with an array of wonderland curiosities, rests against soft yellow walls, while aged wood flooring rounds out the space.
Of course, in-store merchandise is just as fascinating and fun. Gypset moms will be delighted with pieces from Euro-Boho lines such as Bonpoint and Antik Batik. Chic mothers can dress up their equally chic daughters in Phillip Lim and Chloé. Then there are the classic staples fom Papo d’Anjo and Florence Eiseman.
More than just play clothes, Little BG is the place to go for special occasion dressing as well. There are dresses from Isabel Garreton and Joan Calabrese, boy’s suits from Hickey Freeman, ties/bowties and dress shirts from Charvet and christening gowns designed by Baby Dior. If it’s extra special you want, Little BG accommodates custom made to order designs.
The department also has a comprehensive layette offering, including a collection of hand-embroidered footies and playsuits made from the softest Pima cotton, Italian made cashmere booties, onesies, receiving blankets, Moses baskets and gift sets
And what’s a kids department without the fun stuff? Little BG stocks a unique collection of handmade toys and gifts like plush animals from Steiff, nostalgic rocking horses and pull toys, oversize headbands and bows from Britain’s Tour de Force, sterling silver baby gifts from Monica Rich Kosann and traditional pedal push race cars and airplanes.
Little BG is on the seventh floor of Bergdorf Goodman, located on the corner of 58th Street and 5th Avenue, New York, NY.
