Club 8 to play Manila and Cebu
Another great foreign act comes to the Philippines for the first time as Swedish indie pop duo Club 8 performs at the SMX Convention Center (near SM Mall of Asia) on May 14 and at Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue on May 15.
Their concerts are in support of their latest album “The People’s Record” (out on May 12) and brought to us by Lilystars Records & Modernrock Bureau in cooperation with The POP Shoppe!
Club 8 are Johan Angergard and Karolina Kornstedt, and they have been putting out their mellow but melodic brand of electronica and dance music since 1995.
“The People’s Record” is their seventh album, and the first album not produced by Angergard himself, who is the main songwriter.
It’s said to be heavily inspired by a trip to Brazil.
While most of their songs have a bossa nova feel to them, more recent albums reflect influences from genres like trip-hop and chill-out lounge, so I’m keen to see if they’ll return to that earlier sound but with an updated sensibility.
In that regard, they’re an interesting band to watch. Their albums can differ greatly in style depending on what they’ve been listening or exposed to in their travels.
They were one of the first Swedish acts to get noticed outside their native country, which has in the last decade invaded the consciousness of many music lovers with artists and bands like The Cardigans, The Hives, Peter Bjorn & John, Jose Gonzalez, Lykke Li, The Radio Dept., and Jens Lekman (who played here last March).
Tickets to the show are P 1,300 for Manila and P 1,000 for Cebu. Shows start at 8:30 p.m.

All registered voters, please remember to go out and vote tomorrow. Remember: no honest vote is a wasted one.
People might try and dissuade you from voting for a candidate you really believe in who may not be performing so well in the polls by saying it’s a wasted vote, but these people are mistaken. Your vote counts; even if your candidate doesn’t make it, your vote will be reflected in the number of people who honestly wanted that candidate to represent them, and may bolster that candidate’s odds anyway (or at least his confidence in trying again in the future).
Even if you abstain, your vote counts. The statistics will be able to tell what number of citizens found none of the candidates worthy of their vote (and it may be a larger number than we realize) and bring to our attention the dissatisfaction we have with those running this particular campaign year.
Be careful and be honest. You’ll sleep better at night.
