Txell Miras: Framed for fashion

MANILA SUNSHINE - Jay Abalos -

BARCELONA — A frame decides the parameters to which most things are limited. A painted canvas’s beauty can stretch only to the lacquered wood of its frame. A country’s bounty stretches only to its borders. And a film cannot pour out of its 3:16 frame ratio.

This concept of boundaries inspired Spanish designer Txell Miras’ Fall/Winter 2009/2010 collection. Influenced by the likes of Martin Margiela and Rei Kawakubo, Txell (pronounced “chel”) admires their unparalleled reputation of creating new concepts and unique experimentation.

Aside from designing for her own clothing line (established 2004), Miras has been in charge of Neil Barrett’s women’s wear since 2003.

Txell admits that she designs much simpler for Spring/Summer. To fully showcase her unique designing talent, she only stages shows during the Fall/Winter season.

For her current collection, she took inspiration from a seemingly limiting idea: the frame. But for Txell Miras, a frame doesn’t limit; it tasks a visionary to focus on an image and read beyond the lines, thus becoming a vessel of further exposition rather than a cumbersome limit.

Frames go against the round curves of the human body, but without being awkward. In order to break a structured silhouette, Txell infuses subtle details like double sleeves with angular details and appliqués on a skirt.

Fabrics used are wool, viscose, rayon and cotton, in neutral colors of black, steel gray, stone gray and white.

Among Txell’s favorite pieces are: a jacket with padded shoulders, a wide dress belted at the back, and a long-framed dress with a necktie.

Txell narrates a memorable experience while filming a conceptual video for the show. “The model wore one of the framed dresses and accidentally fell on the floor. She needed two people to help her to stand.” This made her decide to create a more wearable version of the dress.

Aside from Barcelona, Txell’s collection can also be found at Takashimaya (New York), NG (Christchurch, New Zealand), Kniq and Marijuna (Hong Kong), Maiden (Tokyo), Amarna (Maastrich, Netherlands), Exesse (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Labels (Sittard, Netherlands), Ige (Aiwaille, Belgium), Poles (Nize, France) and Carla (Annecy, France). Her price range is between 100-590 euros.
